About the tour

The Ancient Capital of Colchis and Nature Wonders of Imereti

Kutaisi is far more than Georgia's second city. It is the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Colchis — the legendary destination of Jason and the Argonauts in their quest for the Golden Fleece. Standing on the banks of the Rioni River for over three thousand years, traces of that history are visible at every turn: from 12th-century monasteries to medieval ruins and majestic cathedrals.

We depart Tbilisi at 07:00 to make the most of the day. The drive takes about three hours along a comfortable highway — you can nap or listen to stories about the Imereti region we're heading into. Our first stop is Gelati Monastery, founded in 1106 by King David IV the Builder. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and once you step inside the main temple, you'll understand why: the mosaic of the Virgin Mary in the apse, 12th-13th century frescoes that have preserved their vivid colours for 900 years. This is also the burial place of David the Builder himself — one of the greatest rulers in Georgian history. Guide Timur will tell you how he united the fragmented Georgian principalities and transformed Gelati into the intellectual centre of the entire Caucasus, housing an academy known as the "second Athens."

Next is Bagrati Cathedral, the symbol of Kutaisi. Built in the 11th century, destroyed by Ottoman Turks in the 17th century, and restored in 2012, it stands on a hill above the city offering a panorama of all Kutaisi and its surroundings. From here you can see how the Rioni divides the city in two and how morning mist rises over the Imeretian valley.

After lunch in central Kutaisi, we head to the region's natural wonders. Prometheus Cave is the largest karst cave in Georgia, named after the mythical Titan who, according to legend, was chained somewhere in the Caucasus mountains. The underground route spans 1.4 km through six illuminated halls: stalactites, stalagmites, underground rivers, and petrified waterfalls. The temperature inside is a constant +14 C year-round — bring a light jacket. You can optionally finish the route on an underground boat along the subterranean river — a truly unique experience.

The final stop is Martvili Canyon. Turquoise water, sheer cliffs up to 40 metres high, covered in moss and ivy. The boat ride through the lower canyon is one of the most photogenic experiences in Georgia. The water is so clear you can see every stone on the bottom. The upper part of the canyon is a walking trail along waterfalls and natural pools. We return to Tbilisi by 19:30-20:00 — full of impressions, with hundreds of photos, and a feeling that you've seen a completely different Georgia from Tbilisi.

What Guests Say

★★★★★

"Gelati exceeded all expectations. The 12th-century frescoes are impossible to capture in photos. Timur told us the history behind every painting — we spent over an hour there without noticing. And Prometheus Cave was a separate thrill — underground river, illuminated stalactites, cool relief after a hot day."

"Martvili Canyon was the highlight of the trip. The turquoise water is so vivid it doesn't look real. The boat ride between the cliffs — absolute silence and beauty. Timur planned the day perfectly: early start and we were first at every site. No queues, no crowds. A must-do tour!"

"We went with two kids (ages 8 and 11). The children were absolutely thrilled by the cave — running through the halls, counting stalactites. The canyon was a hit too. Timur connected with the kids, telling myths about the Argonauts and the Golden Fleece. Best day of our entire Georgia trip."
