West Georgia Canyons Tour — Martvili, Okatse & Prometheus Cave
Western Georgia hides the country's most spectacular canyons and caves. In one long day you ride a boat through the turquoise gorge of Martvili, walk the hanging trail of Okatse Canyon above the Kinchkha waterfall, and descend into the underground halls of Prometheus Cave. A full, active day of water, cliffs and stalactites.
Martvili Canyon
Martvili is the jewel of western Georgia: a narrow gorge of emerald water once used as a bathing place by the local Dadiani princes. A short boat ride glides between mossy limestone cliffs and under small waterfalls.
Above the canyon, walkways and a viewing platform overlook the turquoise river — the colours are unreal on a sunny day.
Okatse Canyon and Kinchkha
Okatse Canyon is crossed by a metal walkway cantilevered out from the cliff, more than 100 metres above the river. Walking the hanging trail along the gorge wall is the adrenaline highlight of the day.
Nearby, the Kinchkha waterfall drops in tall tiers through the forest — one of the most photogenic cascades in the country.
Prometheus Cave
Prometheus (Kumistavi) Cave is one of Georgia's great show caves: kilometres of illuminated halls filled with stalactites, stalagmites and underground rivers. A walking route leads through the chambers, and an optional boat ride glides along the subterranean water.
The cool, still air underground is a striking contrast to the canyons above — a complete change of world in a single stop.
Timur's insider tip
This is a long, active day — comfortable shoes and an early start make all the difference. Martvili is best in the morning light when the water glows green; we go there first to beat the crowds. The Okatse hanging walkway is safe but not for severe vertigo — you can admire it from the viewpoints instead. Bring a light layer for Prometheus Cave: it stays cool underground year-round. And if you only do one boat ride, make it Martvili — the canyon from water level is unforgettable.
Detailed itinerary
The day starts very early — western Georgia is around three hours from Tbilisi — so we leave at 07:00 to fit in all three sights without rushing.
We begin at Martvili Canyon for the boat ride and walkways, continue to Okatse and the Kinchkha waterfall, and finish underground at Prometheus Cave before the drive back. The order may shift slightly to match opening times and crowds.
Practical information
The tour starts from your hotel in Tbilisi — Timur picks you up in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. Groups are a maximum of 7 people. Because western Georgia is far, this is a long day; families with older children handle it best. Payment is in Georgian Lari (₾). Booking is through WhatsApp.
When to book
Book 3–5 days ahead in high season (May–October). The canyons are at their best in late spring and summer when the water is high and green. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before; poor weather means a free reschedule.
What to bring
- Comfortable walking shoes with grip — there is a lot of walking on uneven trails
- A light layer for the cool air inside Prometheus Cave
- Sunscreen and a hat for the open canyon viewpoints
- Camera — Martvili's turquoise water and Okatse's walkway are spectacular
Best time to visit
May to October is ideal: full waterfalls, green water and open boat rides. Some boat rides may pause after heavy rain or in winter; we check conditions before departure.
