The only land border between Russia and Georgia. 40 km from Vladikavkaz to Upper Lars. Then the legendary Military Georgian Highway through the Caucasus — straight to Tbilisi. Private tours from ₾90.
Vladikavkaz is the gateway to Georgia by land. The Upper Lars border crossing — the only vehicle crossing between Russia and Georgia — lies just 40 km north of the city. Cross the border, and you are on the Military Georgian Highway: one of the world's most dramatic mountain roads, cutting through the Caucasus before descending to Tbilisi. For residents of Vladikavkaz and North Ossetia, Georgia is not a distant destination — it is a neighbour you can visit in an afternoon. Here is everything you need to know.
The only road connection between Russia and Georgia. Plan your crossing carefully.
Queue warning: Upper Lars queues can stretch 2–8 hours in peak season (July–August) and on Fridays/Sundays. Best times to cross: weekday mornings before 08:00. Check live queue status at pogranichnik.pro or Telegram channels before departure.
Location: Vladikavkaz city centre → Upper Lars is 40 km (45–60 min by car). The crossing is at 1,740m altitude. From the border to Kazbegi town: 10 km. From Kazbegi to Tbilisi: 150 km (~2 hours).
By car: Russian side passport control + customs. Georgian side passport control. Usually 30–90 min when clear. Peak queues: 2–8 hours. Insurance: get Georgian insurance (Aldagi, GPI) at the border, ~30 GEL for 15 days.
By marshrutka: Minibuses from Vladikavkaz bus station to Tbilisi run daily. They cross Upper Lars and continue to Tbilisi. Cost ~800–1,200 RUB. Journey 4–6 hours (plus border wait). Book at the station or via local agencies.
Military Georgian Highway after the border: Dariali Gorge (dramatic canyon), Kazbegi town (Gergeti Trinity Church visible from the road), Ananuri fortress and Jinvali reservoir, Mtskheta. The scenery is extraordinary — allow time to stop and photograph.
Winter caution: The highway can close due to avalanche risk (November–March). Always check road status on the Georgian Roads Department website before travel. Upper Lars itself stays open year-round but the road beyond may be restricted.
The drive from Upper Lars to Tbilisi is an attraction in itself. Plan 5–6 hours to enjoy it properly.
Once in Tbilisi — book private tours in English with guide Timur. Transfer included.
You may have driven past Kazbegi on your way in — this tour takes you deep: Gergeti Trinity Church hike, Mt. Kazbek panorama, Dariali Gorge, Ananuri on the way back.
Eastern Georgia's wine region. Sighnaghi "city of love", Bodbe Monastery, qvevri wine tasting. A world away from the mountain roads you came through.
If you stopped briefly on the highway, come back properly: guided tour of Jvari, Svetitskhoveli and the city's 2,000-year history. Just 20 min from Tbilisi.
After the border crossing and mountain drive, relax into a gentle evening walk through Tbilisi's lit-up Old Town. Narikala, Bridge of Peace, Mtkvari embankment.
Walking tour of Tbilisi + home-cooked Georgian feast: khinkali, khachapuri, satsivi, wine. The warmth of Georgian hospitality — the best reward after a mountain crossing.
Tbilisi → Kakheti → Kazbegi. Three unhurried days including accommodation. For Vladikavkaz visitors who want to see Georgia deeply before driving back.
From the guide who meets land border travellers from North Ossetia regularly.
Weekdays 05:00–08:00 are the quietest. Friday afternoon and Sunday evening are the worst. July–August peak: add 3–4 hours to any estimate. In September–October the highway is at its most beautiful and queues are shorter.
Russian insurance is not valid in Georgia. Buy local insurance at the border: Aldagi or GPI, approximately 30–50 GEL for 15 days. The process takes 5–10 minutes. Have GEL cash or a card ready.
Get some GEL before or at the border. ATMs at Kazbegi and Tbilisi. UnionPay works across Georgia. Russian Visa/Mastercard blocked. Bring some USD or RUB for exchange — good rates in Tbilisi centre.
The Military Georgian Highway is paved and well-maintained. Some sections in the Dariali Gorge are narrow. Winter (Nov–Mar): check road status before departure — closures possible. Summer: excellent road, occasional rockfall zones marked.
Russian SIM works in Georgia (roaming, expensive). Buy a Georgian SIM at Kazbegi or Tbilisi: 5–8 GEL for 10 days with 5GB data. Magti has the best coverage on the Military Highway.
Foreign passport OR internal RF passport (both accepted). Vehicle registration. If renting: rental agreement. Insurance (buy at border). No Georgia visa needed for Russian citizens. Stay up to 365 days.
