Wine tours in Kakheti and Tbilisi. Qvevri winemaking, vineyard visits, Saperavi, Rkatsiteli. Private tour from Tbilisi.
This isn't just another stop on a drinker's map — it's where the whole craft began. Archaeologists trace the first cultivated grapes here back 8,000 years, which is why the country is often called the cradle of viticulture. The signature method is qvevri: the juice ferments and ages inside large clay vessels buried underground, giving amber Rkatsiteli its tannic, almost tea-like character and Saperavi its deep, inky body.
On the road through Kakheti we skip the polished showrooms and head to family marani — cellars where the host pours straight from his own buried jar. A typical tasting runs four to six pours alongside homemade cheese, churchkhela and warm shoti bread. Spring shows the vines in bloom; autumn brings rtveli, the grape harvest, when every village smells of crushed fruit and woodsmoke.

A classic Kakheti wine day runs about 9–10 hours door to door, including the drive, two cellar tastings and lunch. A shorter Sighnaghi-focused route is possible if you're short on time.
Usually four to six pours: amber Rkatsiteli, deep Saperavi, semi-sweet Kindzmarauli, and often a homemade chacha to finish — served with local cheese, churchkhela and shoti bread.
Spring shows the vineyards in bloom; autumn brings rtveli, the grape harvest, when villages press fruit and the cellars are busiest. Tastings run year-round.
