Sighnaghi — City of Love
The city was founded in the 18th century by King Erekle II as a defensive outpost. The fortress wall stretches 4.5 km with 23 towers — one of the best preserved in Georgia. You can walk along the top from tower to tower in 1.5–2 hours.
The town center has small squares with cafes and galleries. Niko Pirosmani, Georgia's great naive artist, was born nearby in the village of Mirzaani — his works can be seen in the local museum.
Bodbe Monastery
2 km from the town stands Bodbe Monastery, founded in the 9th century on the site of Saint Nino's death. Her relics are kept here, drawing pilgrims. The monastery garden descends to Saint Nino's spring — it's tradition to wash your face and drink the water.
The return to Tbilisi passes through Telavi — Kakheti's second-largest city. Along the way, we can stop at a family winery for tasting. Read more: Kakheti Wine Tour from Tbilisi.
Detailed Route — What to See
We begin our journey with Bodbe Monastery, located just a few kilometres from Sighnaghi. This sacred site carries not only religious significance but also breathtaking panoramic views over the Alazani Valley. Here you will learn the story of Saint Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia, and enjoy the silence of this secluded garden. The monastery grounds are beautifully landscaped — perfect for a quiet walk and memorable photographs.
From Bodbe we head into Sighnaghi itself, where narrow cobblestone streets and cosy cafes serving local specialities await. Don't miss the chance to walk along the fortress wall, from where the views stretch across the surrounding countryside. The town centre also has a museum dedicated to Georgian art and culture — worth a visit to understand local traditions. If time allows, pop into one of the small wineries to taste the famous Kakhetian wines made by the ancient qvevri method.
The main square of Sighnaghi hosts cultural events and small markets. Browse the boutique shops offering handmade souvenirs — ceramics, textiles, and woodwork. Every street and every corner carries history and charm, and the atmosphere of romance that defines this "City of Love" will make your visit truly unforgettable.
Practical Tips
Before the tour, think about what to bring with you. Comfortable walking shoes are essential — you'll be on your feet throughout the day exploring the town and fortress. Bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated. If you plan to visit the monastery, dress modestly: shoulders and knees should be covered (scarves are available at the entrance).
- Best seasons: spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) — ideal weather and the landscape is stunning with blossoms or golden vines.
- Plan for a full day: to truly absorb Sighnaghi, a full-day tour gives you time to walk the walls, visit the museum, and explore at your own pace.
- Photography: bring your camera — the fortress wall views over 130 km of Alazani vineyards with the Caucasus behind are spectacular, especially at golden hour.
- Cash: small cafes and shops in Sighnaghi may not accept cards, carry some Georgian lari for lunch and souvenirs.
Timur's Tip
Sighnaghi is often called the "City of Love" — you can register a marriage around the clock at the Palace of Marriages on the main square. But for me the highlight is the view from the fortress walls over the Alazani Valley: 130 km of vineyards to the horizon, with the Caucasus and Azerbaijan in the background. The 18th-century walls stretch nearly 5 km around the entire hill — you can walk the top from one tower to another. Bodbe Monastery 2 km from town: Saint Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia in 327, is buried there. The descent to Saint Nino's spring is 230 steps — the climb back is worth it. Best khinkali in Sighnaghi: at restaurant "Stambo" by the town entrance, ₾8 for a plate.
