"The Life-Giving Pillar" — that is what the cathedral's name means. According to tradition, Christ's Robe — the garment of Jesus Christ, brought to Georgia in the 1st century — is buried here. The current cathedral was built in 1010–1029 and is a masterpiece of medieval architecture.
Svetitskhoveli is the coronation and burial site of Georgian kings. Frescoes from the 14th–17th centuries, unique khachkars, architecture that survived dozens of raids — history can be felt in every stone.
On a hill above the river confluence stands Jvari Church (5th–6th century) — one of the world's first cruciform-domed churches. This is the exact spot from which Lermontov contemplated the "confluence of two rushing waters" — the view described in the poem "Mtsyri".
A trip to Mtskheta is often combined with a tour to Gori or Uplistsikhe Cave City. Timur will help plan the best route. See also: Jvari Monastery dedicated tour.
Your first stop is Jvari Monastery on the hilltop — the view over the Kura-Aragvi confluence in the morning, before the haze sets in, is worth the early start. Then we descend to Svetitskhoveli: entry costs ₾5, and Timur will tell you the surprising story of Christ's Robe. In the old town, stop at a local café for khachapuri.
Mtskheta is only 30 minutes from Tbilisi, but tourists often spend more than 4 hours here because they don't know the right order. I recommend starting with Jvari on top — the view over the Kura-Aragvi confluence in the morning, when there's no haze, is worth getting up early. Then we descend to Svetitskhoveli: entry costs ₾5, and I'll tell you the unexpected story of Christ's Robe. In the town itself, definitely visit the local café on Davitashvili Street: khachapuri with egg and butter for ₾7 — you won't find it like this in Tbilisi. If you go in the morning, you'll be back in time for a Tbilisi evening.
Samtavro Monastery at the entrance to Mtskheta is the third stop that many miss. The first Christian rulers of Georgia — King Mirian III and Queen Nana, baptized in 337 by Saint Nino — are buried here. Still an active women's monastery: the nuns practice icon painting and sell small handmade icons. Near the main church is a tiny 4th-century chapel, literally 3 by 4 meters, one of the oldest in Georgia.
The tour takes 3–4 hours, giving you enough time to see the main sights and enjoy a stroll through the city.

Mtskheta is the ancient capital of Georgia and the closest day trip from Tbilisi (20 km). Svetitskhoveli — the country's main cathedral, housing Christ's Robe. Jvari — a 6th-century church on a mountain with views over the river confluence. Two UNESCO sites in 3–4 hours.
