Every week I get the same question in WhatsApp: "When is the best time to visit Kazbegi?" The honest answer is: it depends on what you're looking for. Snow and solitude — winter. Wildflowers and green slopes — May. Golden light and warm days — September. This guide breaks it down month by month so you can decide for yourself.

Spring: April – May
April — Emerald Slopes, Unpredictable Weather
April is when the valley turns green almost overnight. Snow is melting, the Terek river runs high and turquoise. The problem: cloud cover is frequent, and mornings can be grey until 10–11am. Afternoon visibility tends to improve. The pass road is open, crowds are minimal, and accommodation prices are low.
Recommended for: travellers who don't mind gambling on cloud cover, and want the valley to themselves.
May — The Sweet Spot for First-Timers
May is my favourite month to take guests to Kazbegi. The slopes are brilliantly green, the snow line is still low on the peaks, and the weather is usually stable. Mornings are crisp and clear — the kind of clarity you won't see in summer. Crowds are present but not overwhelming.
The combination of green valley + white peaks is photogenic in a way that no other month quite matches. If you're visiting Kazbegi for the first time and want the classic postcard shot, come in May.
Summer: June – August
June — Best Balance of Summer
June gives you warm temperatures, long daylight hours, and crowds that are still manageable. The mountains are clear in the mornings, flowers are blooming across the alpine meadows, and the hike up to Gergeti is comfortable in a light jacket.
July – August — Peak Season
These are the most popular months — and for good reason. The weather is warm, the mountains are fully accessible, Truso Valley and Gveleti waterfalls are at their best. But there are trade-offs:
- Guesthouses and tours fill up 2–3 weeks in advance
- Gergeti church can have 200+ tourists at once
- Prices are 20–30% higher than shoulder season
- Afternoon thunderstorms hit regularly at altitude
Autumn: September – October
September — The Golden Season
September is arguably the best month of the year for photography. The mountains turn gold and red, the light is softer and warmer than in summer, crowds drop by about 30% from peak, and temperatures are perfect for hiking. The church glows in the afternoon light in a way that summer tourists simply miss.
I've been guiding in Kazbegi for years, and September is consistently when I get the best photos — and the happiest guests.
October — Quiet and Affordable
October sees crowds drop significantly. The valley takes on deep autumn colours. Weather is more variable — you might get three perfect days in a row, or you might hit cloud cover. Morning frosts start appearing at altitude. A good month for those who prefer quiet over certainty.
Winter: November – March
December – February — Snow and Solitude
Winter Kazbegi is genuinely beautiful — Gergeti Trinity Church emerging from low cloud above a snow-covered valley is one of the most dramatic sights in the Caucasus. Guesthouses are almost empty, prices drop by 30–40%, and the atmosphere is intimate.
What you're trading: road closures. Jvari Pass (the Georgian Military Highway between Tbilisi and Kazbegi) can close for 2–5 days at a time in November–March due to snow and avalanche risk. This doesn't happen every week, but it happens regularly enough that you should never plan Kazbegi on the last day before you leave Georgia.

Altitude and Your Health
Stepantsminda town is at 1,700m — high enough to feel a slight effect if you've come straight from sea level, but not enough to cause serious altitude sickness for most people. The hike up to Gergeti Trinity Church reaches 2,170m. The ascent is about 400m of climbing over roughly 3–4km.
A few things to keep in mind:
- UV exposure at 2,000m is 25–30% stronger than at sea level. Burn time is dramatically shorter. Use SPF 50+ and reapply.
- Hydration: The mountain air is dry. Drink more water than you think you need — dehydration at altitude arrives before you notice thirst.
- Pace yourself on the ascent. There is no rush. The church will wait.
- If you feel a headache, dizziness, or shortness of breath beyond normal exertion, descend — don't push through it.
Road Closure Risk by Month
The road to Kazbegi crosses Jvari Pass at 2,395m. This is the only paved route from Tbilisi. Here's how closure risk breaks down by month:
| Period | Closure Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| May – October | None / minimal | Road reliably open |
| November | Low–medium | First closures of the season possible |
| December – February | Medium–high | Closures of 1–5 days happen several times per winter |
| March | Medium | Avalanche season; pass clears gradually |
| April | Low | Usually fully open by mid-April |
Local Events and Festivals
If you happen to be in the region during these, they're worth factoring into your visit:
- Liakhvoba (July–August) — traditional Kazbegi region festival with folk music, dancing, and local food. Dates vary year to year; ask locally.
- September harvest markets — small local markets appear in the village selling honey, churchkhela, and homemade cheese. Nothing organised — just part of the rhythm of the season.
- Orthodox Easter (date varies) — the church at Gergeti holds a special service. Deeply atmospheric if you're there for it, but the approach road gets crowded.
When to Book Your Tour
Here's the honest breakdown:
- Peak season (July–August): Book 2–3 weeks in advance. Tours and guesthouses fill up quickly, and last-minute availability is rare.
- Shoulder season (May–June, September–October): 1 week in advance is usually comfortable. Weekends can fill faster than weekdays.
- Low season (November–April): 2–3 days ahead is typically enough. But if you have a specific preferred date, booking ahead removes any uncertainty.
"We came in late September on Timur's recommendation — the autumn colours were incredible. The valley was half-empty compared to what we'd heard about peak season. Best decision we made for the whole Georgia trip."
