The Georgian Military Highway
Built by the Russian Empire in 1799–1817 along the ancient caravan route linking Tbilisi to Vladikavkaz, the Georgian Military Highway is a spectacle in itself. Each kilometre reveals a new canyon, fortress, or glacier. We follow the Aragvi river valley north from Tbilisi, stopping at Zhinvali reservoir — a turquoise artificial lake where a medieval church tower is still visible above the water in dry years.
Ananuri Fortress — 16th–17th Century
Perched on a cliff above Zhinvali reservoir, Ananuri is the finest medieval fortress on the route. Built by the dukes of Aragvi, it contains two churches, defensive towers, and a graveyard carved with relief crosses. The combination of white stone fortress reflected in turquoise water is the classic image of the Georgian Military Highway.
Gudauri — Georgia's Mountain Resort at 2196m
At 2196m, Gudauri is Georgia's main ski resort, operating December through April. In summer, the lifts run for hikers (₾15 to 3000m), paragliding operators offer tandem flights (~$80), and the mountain air is spectacular. The views from the Gudauri plateau extend into the Greater Caucasus in every direction.
Friendship of Nations Arch
Built in 1983 by Soviet sculptor Zurab Tsereteli to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Treaty of Georgievsk, the Friendship of Nations Arch is a circular mosaic structure on the edge of the Terek gorge. The Soviet-era mosaics depicting Georgian and Russian peoples joining hands are remarkable examples of monumental art. The views from the arch into the deep gorge are spectacular.
Timur's insider tip
Combine Gudauri with Kazbegi for the full Georgian Military Highway experience — together they cover Ananuri, Gudauri resort, Friendship Arch, Cross Pass (2395m), and Gergeti Trinity Church (2170m). It's a 12-hour day from Tbilisi but the most complete mountain route in Georgia.
Itinerary
09:00Departure from Tbilisi — north along Georgian Military Highway
Gudauri is not only about skiing. In summer, paragliding launches from 2400m — one of the best tandem flight sites in Europe by altitude-to-price ratio. The Cross Pass at 2395m is reachable in winter and summer alike, and the Friendship of Nations Arch is a spectacular piece of Soviet monumental art that very few travellers outside Georgia know about.
Along the way you pass through Ananuri — a 16th-century fortress above a turquoise reservoir — and through Pasanauri, famous for the best khinkali dumplings on the military road. The route covers three distinct climate zones: subtropical Tbilisi, forested river valleys, and alpine meadows above the snowline.

The Route in Detail
The tour departs from your hotel at 09:00 and heads north along the Georgian Military Highway — one of the most dramatic mountain roads in the Caucasus, built by the Russian Empire in 1799–1817 along an ancient caravan route. The first major stop is Zhinvali reservoir, a turquoise artificial lake where you can see a medieval church tower still visible above the waterline in dry years.
Ananuri fortress (16th–17th c.) sits on a cliff above the reservoir. Built by the dukes of Aragvi, it contains two churches, defensive towers, and a graveyard carved with relief crosses. The reflection of white stone walls in the turquoise water is one of the classic images of Georgia. Allow 20 minutes here — entry is free.
Continuing north through Pasanauri (famous for khinkali dumplings) and Gudauri village, the road climbs into the alpine zone. At 2196m, Gudauri resort has a panoramic platform with views stretching into the Greater Caucasus in every direction. In winter: 57km of pistes from 1990m to 3279m. In summer: gondola runs for ₾15, paragliding tandem flights start from roughly $80.
The Friendship of Nations Arch, built in 1983 by sculptor Zurab Tsereteli, stands on the edge of the Terek gorge. The circular mosaic structure depicts Georgian and Russian peoples through Soviet-era monumental art. The gorge views from here are among the most dramatic on the entire route.
Practical Tips
Before heading to Gudauri, a few practical points:
→ Bring a warm layer even in summer — temperatures at 2200m can be 10–15°C cooler than Tbilisi
→ Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential at altitude — UV is much stronger above 2000m
→ Comfortable walking shoes — the fortress grounds and gorge viewpoints require some light walking
→ If you plan to ski: arrange rental in advance, ski pass approx. ₾100–150/day
→ Best seasons: December–March for skiing, May–September for hiking and paragliding
→ The road can be snowy in winter — Timur drives a 4WD vehicle and monitors conditions
Timur's tip
Gudauri in summer is a completely different place from winter. The ski lifts run year-round: for ₾15 you can ride to 3000m and see the Greater Caucasus ridge without gear or effort. At the Cross Pass viewpoint (2395m), the 1983 Friendship of Nations mosaic tells the history of the Georgian Military Highway in stone. Paragliding in Gudauri launches from 2200m and costs around $80 with an instructor — one of the best value tandem flights in Europe by altitude. The drive from Tbilisi takes about 2 hours via Ananuri — we always stop there.
