The Georgian Military Highway

Built by the Russian Empire in 1799–1817 along the ancient caravan route linking Tbilisi to Vladikavkaz, the Georgian Military Highway is a spectacle in itself. Each kilometre reveals a new canyon, fortress, or glacier. We follow the Aragvi river valley north from Tbilisi, stopping at Zhinvali reservoir — a turquoise artificial lake where a medieval church tower is still visible above the water in dry years.

Ananuri Fortress — 16th–17th Century

Perched on a cliff above Zhinvali reservoir, Ananuri is the finest medieval fortress on the route. Built by the dukes of Aragvi, it contains two churches, defensive towers, and a graveyard carved with relief crosses. The combination of white stone fortress reflected in turquoise water is the classic image of the Georgian Military Highway.

Gudauri — Georgia's Mountain Resort at 2196m

At 2196m, Gudauri is Georgia's main ski resort, operating December through April. In summer, the lifts run for hikers (₾15 to 3000m), paragliding operators offer tandem flights (~$80), and the mountain air is spectacular. The views from the Gudauri plateau extend into the Greater Caucasus in every direction.

Friendship of Nations Arch

Built in 1983 by Soviet sculptor Zurab Tsereteli to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Treaty of Georgievsk, the Friendship of Nations Arch is a circular mosaic structure on the edge of the Terek gorge. The Soviet-era mosaics depicting Georgian and Russian peoples joining hands are remarkable examples of monumental art. The views from the arch into the deep gorge are spectacular.

Timur's insider tip Combine Gudauri with Kazbegi for the full Georgian Military Highway experience — together they cover Ananuri, Gudauri resort, Friendship Arch, Cross Pass (2395m), and Gergeti Trinity Church (2170m). It's a 12-hour day from Tbilisi but the most complete mountain route in Georgia.
