Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) — a mountain village 157 km from Tbilisi, at the foot of Mt. Kazbek (5,047 m). The iconic Gergeti Trinity Church (14th century) perches at 2,170 m above the village with a view of the entire Caucasus range. A guided tour from Tbilisi costs from ₾175 per person and takes 10–12 hours. One of the most spectacular day trips in the Caucasus.
Why Kazbegi is a must-visit
Kazbegi is the image that defines Georgia in the world's imagination — a medieval church on a cliff against snow-capped peaks, framed by dramatic gorges. It is both the symbol of Georgian Christianity and a gateway to the Greater Caucasus.
What makes Kazbegi special is not just the destination but the journey. The Georgian Military Highway — 212 km of mountain road — passes through Ananuri fortress, Gudauri ski resort and the 2,395 m Jvari Pass. The drive alone is worth the trip.
Kazbegi pairs naturally with a Kakheti wine tour on a multi-day itinerary through Georgia. More on the route: Kazbegi day tour from Tbilisi.

Gergeti Trinity Church: jeep or hike?
Gergeti Trinity Church (Tsminda Sameba) sits at 2,170 m on a rocky promontory above the Terek River. Getting there from Stepantsminda village:
- Shared jeep — ₾30–50 per person return. 4WD vehicles wait in the village square. Journey takes 20 minutes up a rough track
- Private jeep — ₾100–150 for the whole vehicle. More flexible timing
- Hiking — 1.5–2 hours up, 1–1.5 hours down. Well-marked trail from the village. Elevation gain ~550 m. Bring water and sun protection — no shade on upper section
The church is an active Orthodox monastery. Entrance is free. Women should cover their heads. Photography inside is restricted. The panoramic view from the churchyard — Mt. Kazbek, the Terek gorge, the village below — is the highlight of the entire trip.
Best time to visit Kazbegi
- May–June — ideal: green valleys, flowers on the slopes, Gergeti Church often snow-free. Road open. Cool temperatures (10–18°C in village)
- July–August — peak season: busy, accommodation pricier. Hot in Tbilisi but pleasant at altitude. Best for Truso gorge
- September–October — golden autumn: larches turn yellow, fewer tourists, clearest skies for mountain views
- Winter (December–March) — Kazbegi is accessible if the road is open. Gergeti in snow is magical. Gudauri for skiing on the way up
Food in Stepantsminda
Stepantsminda has a small but quality food scene that has grown with tourism:
- Khinkali with lamb — the mountain version, larger and more robust than Tbilisi-style. Best eaten at local guesthouses. ₾1.50–2 per piece
- Terek trout — fresh from the river, grilled or pan-fried. A local specialty not found in Tbilisi. ₾18–28 per portion
- Mchadi with sulguni — cornbread with Georgian cheese. Hearty mountain breakfast. ₾5–8
- Guesthouse lunches — most guesthouses offer set lunches with soup, mains and homemade wine. ₾20–30 per person
Kazbegi exceeded every expectation. The Military Highway alone is worth the trip — Ananuri Fortress, the Gudauri panorama, the descent into the gorge. And then Gergeti Church appears out of nowhere against the glacier. Timur knew exactly when to stop and when to keep going. The best day of our Georgia trip.
Practical tips
- Wear layers — temperature in Stepantsminda is 10–15°C cooler than Tbilisi
- Bring cash — ATMs in Stepantsminda are limited, card payments not always available
- Start early — the highway gets busier after 10:00, and afternoon clouds often obscure mountain views
- Book accommodation in advance in July–August — guesthouses fill up fast
- Altitude note — Stepantsminda is at 1,740 m, Jvari Pass at 2,395 m. Take it easy if you're sensitive to altitude
