Narikala Fortress Tour — Cable Car, Panorama & the Botanical Garden Waterfall
Tbilisi's ancient citadel has watched over the city for 1600 years. Rise above the old town by cable car, walk the fortress walls with panoramic views over the Kura river, then descend through the Botanical Garden to a hidden waterfall.
Narikala — 1600 Years Above Tbilisi
Narikala fortress is the oldest and most visible landmark in Tbilisi. Built in the 4th century by Persian rulers and expanded over 1600 years by Arabs, Byzantines, Mongols, and Georgians, it forms the natural backbone of the old town — visible from almost every street below.
The name "Narikala" derives from the Persian "Narin Qala" — little fortress or citadel. Despite repeated earthquakes, wars, and the devastating 1827 Russian gunpowder explosion, the walls and towers still stand, offering the best elevated viewpoint over the entire city. Timur will tell you the full story: Persians, Arabs, Mongols, Turks — everyone wanted to capture this fortress. He will also point out the Mother Georgia monument and the best angles for photography.
How This Tour Differs from an Old Tbilisi Walking Tour
The Old Tbilisi walking tour is a pedestrian route covering the entire historic centre over 3–4 hours. The Narikala tour focuses specifically on the fortress, the cable car experience, and the panoramic views. The two tours complement each other perfectly and can be combined on the same day.
The Cable Car from Rike Park
We ascend by cable car from Rike Park (₾2.50 each way), rising above the rooftops of the old town in three minutes. The cable car runs 09:00–22:00, making it the easiest and most scenic approach to the fortress. On arrival, the view opens immediately — the Peace Bridge glinting below, the Kura river making its curve through the city, Metekhi Church on its dramatic cliff.
The Fortress Walls — a 360° Panorama of Tbilisi
Walking along the upper ramparts of Narikala gives you a view of Tbilisi that no other point in the city can match. To the north: the Caucasus mountains on a clear day. To the east: Metekhi Church and the Avlabari district. To the west: the TV tower on Mtatsminda and the Mother Georgia statue. Below: the sulfur bath domes of Abanotubani, the minarets of the old mosque, and the dome of Sioni Cathedral.
The Church of St. Nicholas within the fortress walls (12th century, rebuilt 1996) is a peaceful stop before the descent. Timur will explain the full history — which armies passed through these gates and what each conquest meant for the city below.
Descent through the Botanical Garden
Rather than returning by cable car, Timur leads the descent through Tbilisi's Botanical Garden — 128 hectares of forest and gardens established in 1845. The path winds down through oak and chestnut trees to the Leghvtakhevi gorge, where a 25-metre waterfall drops into a pool. This is one of Tbilisi's most beautiful and least-known spots — most visitors to the fortress never find it.

Timur's Tip
Go early. By 08:00 the fortress is almost empty — the old walls, morning light, and the city waking up below you. By 11:00 the tour groups arrive and the cable car queues form. Early morning light is also the best for photography: soft gold across the rooftops, mist still clearing from the Kura valley. At night the fortress is illuminated and the cable car runs until 22:00 for a completely different experience — the city lights reflected in the river, the Peace Bridge glowing, the bath district warm and steaming.

Practical Tips
Before the tour, a few things will make the experience more comfortable. The Botanical Garden descent involves uneven stone paths, so wear comfortable shoes. In summer, bring a hat and sunscreen — the fortress walls offer little shade and Tbilisi in July can reach 38°C. In winter, the fortress is magical after light snow but the cable car occasionally pauses in strong wind: Timur will check conditions in advance.
- Dress for the season. Spring and autumn are ideal — mild temperatures, green hillsides. Summer: light clothes but bring water. Winter: warm layers; the Botanical Garden in snow is extraordinary.
- Charge your phone. The panorama from the upper walls is one of the most-photographed views in Georgia. You will want full battery.
- Cable car payment. Buy a metro card (Metromoney) at any Tbilisi metro station — it works on the cable car. Cost: ₾2.50 per trip. Card costs ₾2 to purchase.
- After the tour. The Abanotubani sulfur baths are five minutes from the tour endpoint — a perfect way to finish the morning. Private bath rooms from ₾40/hour. Timur can recommend the best one.
- Combination option. The Narikala tour pairs perfectly with the Old Tbilisi walking tour (add 2 hours, same day). Ask Timur about the combined route.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the climb to Narikala difficult?
The cable car from Rike Park takes 2 minutes. The descent on foot through the Botanical Garden takes about 30 minutes on a gentle, well-maintained path — suitable for most visitors including children and older guests. If you prefer, the return can also be made by cable car.
How much does the cable car cost?
₾2.50 each way. Payment is by metro card (TBC Pay or BOG Metromoney). Cards are purchased at any Tbilisi metro station for ₾2 and are reusable. Timur will guide you through the process if it's your first time.
What is the best time of year to visit Narikala?
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the most comfortable seasons — mild temperatures, colourful vegetation, and clear skies for mountain views. Summer is excellent but hot: plan an early start. Winter brings dramatic atmosphere and occasional snow on the fortress stones — a favourite for photographers.
Is advance booking required?
Advance booking is strongly recommended, especially during the high season (May–October). Write to Timur via WhatsApp — he replies within 15 minutes and holds your spot for 24 hours without prepayment. Last-minute bookings (same-day) are sometimes possible, subject to availability.
Are there age or fitness restrictions?
The tour is suitable for all ages. The Botanical Garden descent is gentle and takes about 30 minutes. Guests with limited mobility can return by cable car instead of walking down. Children love the fortress walls and the waterfall. If you have specific concerns, mention them when booking — Timur will adjust the route.
Can I combine Narikala with the Old Tbilisi walking tour?
Yes — Narikala is naturally included in the Old Tbilisi walking tour (₾135, 5 hours). The standalone Narikala tour (₾135, 3 hours) is ideal if you have limited time or want to focus on the fortress and Botanical Garden. You can also add the Narikala extension to any other Tbilisi tour — ask Timur.
What is the Leghvtakhevi waterfall?
Leghvtakhevi is a 25-metre waterfall hidden in the gorge at the bottom of the Botanical Garden. It feeds the small stream that runs through Abanotubani. Most visitors to the fortress never find it — it is not signposted and not on standard tour itineraries. Timur always includes it in the descent route.
