The most accessible one-day trek leads to the Chalaat Glacier at 2700m — a 4-5 hour return route through alpine meadows and moraine fields. For those seeking more challenge, the route to Koruldi Lakes at 3000m rewards with dramatic panoramic views of Mt. Ushba. The Svaneti tour from Tbilisi begins with an early morning departure, heading west through the Georgian countryside. As you leave the lowlands behind, the road climbs through mountain passes with increasingly dramatic views of the Greater Caucasus range. Along the way there are stops in small villages where you can taste local snacks and photograph the landscape. Arrival in Mestia, the capital of Svaneti, happens in the mid-afternoon — time enough for a first walk among the towers and to settle into the guesthouse before the evening.
The next morning is dedicated to exploring the Svan towers and ancient churches, many of which are UNESCO-protected. The Svan History Museum visit gives essential context — understanding the role the towers played in protecting not just people but an entire medieval cultural legacy completely changes how you see the structures standing outside. Before departing for Svaneti, prepare for highland conditions. Even in summer, temperatures at altitude can shift dramatically within an hour. Packing the right gear is essential for comfort and safety on the trekking day.
2-3 days minimum. The drive from Tbilisi takes 7 hours each way. A 2-day itinerary gives one full day in Svaneti; a 3-day itinerary allows for more extensive trekking, a visit to Ushguli (the highest permanently inhabited village in Europe at 2200m), and a more relaxed pace throughout.

The Chalaat Glacier route is accessible for most people in reasonable physical condition. Koruldi Lakes involves a steeper climb and is better suited to those who enjoy active hiking.
June through September offers the best conditions: accessible roads and trails, comfortable temperatures for trekking, and maximum daylight hours. Even in this window, be prepared for afternoon cloud cover and temperature drops at altitude. The main road to Mestia is open year-round, but winter driving through the passes can be challenging and requires an appropriate vehicle.
Local guesthouses are the primary accommodation option: ₾50-90 per person per night, usually with breakfast and dinner included. The home-cooked meals are one of the highlights of the trip. Book in advance from May through September. There are also a few small hotels in Mestia for those who prefer more privacy.
Kubdari is the signature dish of Svaneti — a flatbread stuffed with spiced minced meat (beef and pork), onions, and the unique Svan spice blend Svanuri Marili, which contains fenugreek, coriander, garlic, dried marigold petals, and red pepper. Svaneti is not just mountains — it is a different civilisation. In Mestia, Svans still live in houses next to their medieval towers, not as a museum exhibit but as an ordinary fact of life. I recommend starting the Mestia–Zartkhali trail in the first half of the day: by 11am clouds form around the summit of Ushba and the view closes. Mestia is at 1500m, so in the first hours after arrival do not rush — give your body time to adjust to the altitude.
At the Svan History Museum, specifically ask to see the medieval icons in the special storage room — they are not on general display, but the guides open it for visitors who ask. These are gold artifacts from the 9th-11th centuries that survived the Mongols and the Persians because local families hid them inside the towers for generations.
Svan cuisine is entirely different from the rest of Georgia. Kubdari — a spiced meat pie made with Svan salt (utsho-suneli, red pepper, cumin) — one piece keeps you going for half a day. The local barley chacha is more mild and aromatic than standard Georgian grape chacha. Guesthouse dinners with wine and two courses typically cost ₾25-30 — home-cooked and genuinely excellent.
