Svaneti — UNESCO World Heritage Highlands
Upper Svaneti was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996 for its outstanding medieval cultural landscape. The Svan towers, built between the IX and XII centuries, were defensive structures where families sheltered during raids. Today over 175 towers survive in Mestia and surrounding villages.
Mestia, the regional capital, sits at 1500m in a valley flanked by peaks exceeding 4000m. The Svan Historical Museum holds gold and silver artifacts, medieval icons, and manuscripts spanning 1500 years of Svan history. The area is also a base for trekking to the Chalaat Glacier (2700m) and Koruldi Lakes (3000m).

Practical Tips
Timur's tip: Try the local kubdari (Svan meat pie with wild spices) and guesthouse dinner — most guesthouses prepare traditional Svan dishes for ₾25-30. The barley chacha (Svan brandy) is lighter and more aromatic than standard Georgian chacha. Book accommodation in advance in summer.
- Season: May-October for best conditions. Winter access is possible but roads can be difficult.
- Altitude: Mestia is at 1500m. Trekking destinations reach 2700-3000m. Acclimatise before strenuous hikes.
- Alternative: Flights to Mestia from Kutaisi on Vanilla Sky (₾120 each way, 25 min) — ask Timur to arrange.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the Svaneti tour?
2-3 days minimum. The drive from Tbilisi takes 7 hours each way. A 2-day itinerary gives one full day in Svaneti; a 3-day itinerary allows for more trekking and exploration.
What accommodation is available in Mestia?
Local guesthouses are the main option: ₾50-90 per person per night with breakfast and dinner included. We recommend booking in advance May-September. There are also a few small hotels.
Is Svaneti accessible year-round?
The main road to Mestia is open year-round, though winter can bring difficult conditions. The best season is May-October. The Ushguli route (the highest permanently inhabited village in Europe) requires summer conditions.
What is kubdari?
Kubdari is the Svan version of khachapuri — a bread stuffed with spiced minced meat (beef and pork), onions, and the Svan spice blend Svanuri Marili (containing fenugreek, coriander, garlic, marigold, and red pepper). It is the signature dish of Svaneti.
Timur's Insider Tip
Most tourists come to Svaneti for the towers and the views, miss the Svan History Museum, and leave. The museum has one of the best collections of medieval Georgian gold and silver artifacts I have seen anywhere — 9th-12th century icons, jewelry, and manuscripts kept in the towers for centuries. It takes 45 minutes and completely changes how you see the towers outside. Also: ask your guesthouse host about the family tower — most Svan families still own their ancestral tower and will show you inside if you ask.
Why Choose This Tour
Svaneti is the most dramatic landscape in Georgia — UNESCO towers, glaciers, peaks above 4000m, and medieval villages. This is not a day trip; it is an expedition, and it requires a guide who knows the roads, the guesthouses, and the local culture. Timur handles all logistics so you focus on experiencing one of the world's great mountain destinations.
