Svaneti is one of the most remote and spectacular regions in the entire Caucasus. The medieval Svan towers, some dating to the 9th century, rise above glacial valleys at the foot of Europe's highest peaks. Ushguli — 2200m above sea level — has been continuously inhabited for millennia. This is Georgia's most dramatic landscape.
How to Get There
Two options. Option A — flight: Tbilisi airport at 09:00, landing in Mestia at 09:40 (approx. ₾120 per person, Vanilla Sky airline). The landing itself is an experience — a small propeller plane touching down on a narrow strip between Caucasus peaks. Highly recommended. Book 2–3 weeks ahead in season; there are only 2–3 flights daily on 15–19-seat aircraft that fill up fast.
Option B — drive: Depart Tbilisi at 07:00, through Kutaisi (4 hours), then Zugdidi and the mountain road to Mestia (3 more hours). Total 7 hours, with the altitude gradually rising to 1500m. The Enguri gorge section is spectacular. Arrive Mestia around 14:00. Timur arranges a comfortable 4WD for the whole group.
Detailed Day-by-Day Programme
Day 1 — Tbilisi to Svaneti. Departure from your hotel at 07:00 (if driving) or Tbilisi Airport at 09:00 (if flying). En route or on arrival: check in to a traditional Svan guesthouse — a stone-walled home with a medieval tower, typically ₾70–100/night including dinner. Evening walk through Mestia: the 11th–12th century towers (of the original 175, 160 survive), and stunning views of the Caucasus crest at sunset.
Day 2 — Hiking Day. Morning at the Svan History Museum: icons from the 8th–10th centuries, gold jewellery, illuminated manuscripts preserved by Svaneti's isolation for a thousand years. Then choose your hike:
Route A — Chalati Glacier (recommended, moderate): start 09:00, 11km round trip, 600m elevation gain, 4–5 hours. You finish at the glacier tongue (~2300m) — blue ice, moraine, glacial streams. Views of Ushba (4710m) and Tetnuldi (4974m).
Route B — Koruldi Lakes (harder): start 08:00, summit at 2700m, 6–7 hours. Panoramic views of the entire Greater Caucasus range. Good fitness required. Evening: dinner in Mestia — try Svan khinkali (more dough, no sauce needed), kubdari (spiced meat pie), and local chacha.
Day 3 — Ushguli. 45km from Mestia on a mountain track (2 hours each way by 4WD) — this road cannot be done in a regular car. Ushguli sits at 2200m: four interconnected villages, approximately 200 permanent residents, towers from the 12th–14th centuries. It is the highest permanently inhabited settlement in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The backdrop is Mount Shkhara (5068m) and its glaciers. After returning to Mestia, pack for the journey south.
Day 4 — Return via Kutaisi. Drive south: Gelati Monastery (12th century, burial place of King David the Builder, UNESCO), then Prometheus Cave: 22 halls, constant 14°C, an underground river and boat section. Arrive Tbilisi in the evening.
Three Practical Tips
- Book Tbilisi–Mestia flights 2–3 weeks ahead in season. There are only 2–3 daily departures on 15–19-seat aircraft; they sell out fast.
- The Mestia–Ushguli road is an unmade mountain track — only 4WD vehicles can manage it safely. Timur arranges the right vehicle.
- Trekking poles and gaiters can be rented in Mestia for ₾5–10/day — useful on the steep descent from the glacier.
What to Pack
- Hiking boots with ankle support (mandatory — not trainers)
- Light down jacket or warm fleece — above 2300m it is cool even in August
- Wind- and water-resistant jacket — mountain weather changes fast
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ — UV intensity doubles at altitude
- Cash in Georgian lari ₾200–300 (cards are rarely accepted in Svaneti)
Timur's Tip
My recommended 4-day schedule: Day 1 — Tbilisi to Zugdidi to Mestia. Day 2 — Mestia: towers and museum. Day 3 — Ushguli (highest village in Europe). Day 4 — return to Tbilisi. Sleep in Mestia guesthouses (₾60–100/night including meals). If you have a 5th day, add Martvili Canyon on the way back — turquoise water in a slot canyon, one of the most photogenic stops in western Georgia.

Why Choose This Tour
Over 3 years working as a guide in Georgia, I have run more than 500 tours and know what matters to travellers: punctuality, real information instead of generic commentary, and the flexibility to change the route when conditions or interests suggest it. Every tour is private — I never fill buses with 40 strangers. Maximum 7 guests means you can ask every question, stop wherever you want, and spend exactly as long as you need at each location.
A 4.9 rating on Google Maps (based on 76 reviews) reflects consistent quality. I reply on WhatsApp within 10–15 minutes, send a detailed itinerary before departure, and remain available after the tour. Many guests come back for a second or third trip — that is the best indication of what this service is like.
How Booking Works
Message me on WhatsApp: +995 511 272 623. I will confirm the date, group size, and any specific requests. You will receive a confirmation with the full itinerary, timing, and price. A 10% deposit secures the booking; the balance is paid on the day of the tour. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. If weather causes problems, we reschedule at no extra charge.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to get from Tbilisi to Svaneti?
Driving to Mestia takes 7–8 hours via the scenic mountain road. The tour includes an early-morning departure, or you can take the 40-minute flight (book seats in advance — planes are small).
When is Svaneti open for visitors?
Svaneti is accessible from May to October. The best time is July–August (alpine flowers, clear roads) and late May–June (snow still on the peaks, green valleys). The Enguri Pass road may be closed by snow in winter.
What is there to see in Svaneti?
The medieval Svan defensive towers of Mestia, the village of Ushguli at the foot of Mount Shkhara, glaciers and mountain lakes — UNESCO added Upper Svaneti to the World Heritage List in 1996.
Can children come on this tour?
Yes, families are welcome. The Ushguli drive and Mestia walks are suitable for older children. The Chalati glacier hike is moderate — manageable for fit children over 10. I will adjust the pace to the group.
Is accommodation included?
Guesthouses in Mestia (₾70–100/night, typically with dinner included) are not in the tour price but I recommend and help book them. They are traditional Svan homes — the best way to experience local life.
