The Complete Georgia Route
Tbilisi (2 days)
The starting and finishing point of the tour. Ancient sulphur baths in Abanotubani, wooden-balconied old town, the modern art scene of Fabrika, extraordinary food markets, and wine bars serving orange wine straight from the qvevri.
Mtskheta and Gori (1 day)
UNESCO World Heritage Mtskheta was the ancient spiritual capital of Georgia — the country was Christianised here in 337 AD. Jvari Monastery sits on a cliff where two rivers meet. The Stalin Museum in Gori is one of the most thought-provoking museum experiences in the former Soviet Union: built as a monument, it has become a mirror of history.
Kazbegi (1–2 days)
The Greater Caucasus at its most dramatic. Departure from Tbilisi at 08:00. First stop — Ananuri Fortress (16th c.) above the turquoise Zhinvali Reservoir. Then the mountain ski resort of Gudauri (2196 m) and the Cross Pass (2395 m) — the border between Georgia and the high mountain world. Even in summer it is cool here, and the views open on both sides of the Caucasus ridge. The descent takes you to Stepantsminda at the foot of Mount Kazbek.
The ascent to Gergeti Trinity Church: on foot (40–50 min) or by off-road vehicle (₾20 per person). The 14th-century church stands at 2170 m. On a clear day Mount Kazbek (5047 m) fills the entire horizon.
Kakheti Wine Region (2 days)
70% of Georgian wine comes from Kakheti. Sighnaghi — the walled "city of love" above the Alazani Valley. Telavi — regional capital surrounded by ancient plane trees. Tsinandali estate. Family wineries with qvevri tastings. In October — the harvest season, when the whole valley smells of fermentation.
Borjomi and Vardzia (1–2 days)
The mineral water springs of Borjomi that supplied the Romanov court. Then Vardzia — 3000 rooms carved into a volcanic cliff by Queen Tamar in the 12th century. One of the most spectacular cave complexes in the world and largely unknown outside Georgia.
Kutaisi and Canyons (1–2 days)
Gelati Cathedral (UNESCO) — 12th-century mosaics that rival Ravenna. Prometheus Cave (11 km underground, boat included). Okatse Canyon — a glass walkway suspended 40 m above the gorge. Martvili Canyon — emerald water in a limestone labyrinth.
Svaneti (2–3 days)
Mestia, Svan defensive towers, Chalati Glacier, Koruldi Lakes (2700 m). Ushguli — at 2200 m, the highest permanently inhabited village in Europe — where medieval stone towers and working farms have coexisted for a thousand years.
Batumi (1–2 days)
The Black Sea coast. Gonio-Apsaros Roman fortress (1st century AD). Botanical Garden above the sea. The extraordinary architectural mix of Art Nouveau mansions, Soviet sanatoria, and glass towers built after 2010.

Detailed Day-by-Day Route
Departure at 08:00 from your Tbilisi hotel. The first major stop on the mountain leg is Ananuri Fortress (16th–17th c.) above Zhinvali Reservoir. From here the Caucasus ridge is visible, especially in autumn when the mountains are already snow-capped and the water is still turquoise.
Gudauri (2196 m) — a short stop at the viewpoint by the Friendship of Nations Arch. Then the road follows the Terek River down to Stepantsminda. Timur will explain why the Imam Shamil surrendered to the Russian Empire here in 1859, and what that means for the region today.
The ascent to Gergeti Trinity Church (2170 m): 40–50 minutes on foot along the trail or by local off-road vehicle (₾20 extra per person). The 14th-century church stands literally above the clouds — on a clear morning Mount Kazbek (5047 m) is visible at full height. Lunch in Stepantsminda at a local cafe — khinkali, khachapuri, lemonade. Around ₾25–30 per person.
The Kakheti leg typically spans two days: Sighnaghi and the Alazani Valley on the first, winery tastings and Telavi on the second. The Borjomi–Vardzia leg is a full day minimum — Vardzia alone takes two to three hours to explore properly.
Svaneti requires at least two days: arrival in Mestia, towers and local museum on day one; Ushguli or Koruldi Lakes on day two. Batumi can be done in one long day from Kutaisi or as an overnight stop before returning to Tbilisi.
Practical Tips
- Dress in layers. Tbilisi in July is +35°C. The Cross Pass is +10°C. The car will cycle between extremes — a light fleece is essential even in summer.
- Bring water and snacks. The tour is a full day on most legs — maintain your energy between restaurant stops.
- Camera or phone charged. Each region offers completely different landscapes. Georgia is one of the most photogenic countries in the world.
- Mountain safety. If you plan to walk higher routes in Svaneti, tell Timur in advance. Conditions change quickly above 2500 m.
- Book early in high season. May–June and September–October fill up fast. WhatsApp is the fastest way to secure your spot.
Timur's Tip
Gergeti church stands at 2170 m and the walk up takes 1 to 1.5 hours depending on your pace. I always tell guests: leave the car in Stepantsminda no later than 10:00 — by noon, Kazbek (5047 m) disappears behind cloud and you only see grey. Early in the morning, while mist still sits in the valley, the mountain hangs directly above you. If the walk is not an option — off-road vehicles run from the base for ₾20 one way. In Stepantsminda itself, the best lunch spot is the cafe by the river: khinkali with mountain meat and homemade suluguni cheese. Around ₾25–30 per person and you leave full.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the All of Georgia tour suitable for experienced travelers only?
Not at all. All transport is private car on paved roads. Walking sections are optional at every stop. The tour suits families, seniors, and first-time visitors to Georgia equally well. If anyone in your group has mobility limitations, let Timur know in advance and the route will be adjusted.
Can I choose which regions to include?
Absolutely. The tour is modular by design — you choose the regions that interest you most and how many days you have. Timur will build a custom itinerary around your preferences. The minimum practical combination is Tbilisi + Kazbegi + Kakheti (3 days); the full loop is 14 days.
What is the best time of year for the full Georgia tour?
May–June and September–October offer the best simultaneous conditions across all regions: mountain roads clear of snow, wine country active, Black Sea warm, and no extreme summer heat in the lowlands. Svaneti is accessible from June to October. The Kazbegi leg runs year-round but winter road closures happen — Timur checks conditions before departure.
Is advance booking required?
Yes — especially in high season (May–October). Booking in advance guarantees your place and allows Timur to prepare a personalised itinerary, arrange hotels, and confirm all logistics. WhatsApp (+995 511 272 623) is the fastest way to book. 10% deposit at booking, balance on the first day of the tour.
Are there age or physical requirements?
The tour is suitable for all ages. All main transport is private car. Mountain walks — Gergeti church, Ushguli, Koruldi Lakes — are optional at every point. Off-road vehicles are available where needed. Participants with limited mobility should mention this during booking so logistics can be arranged in advance.
