Transfer from Tbilisi to Kazbegi: marshrutka from Didube Square ₾15 (departures 10:00–11:00 AM), full-car taxi ₾120–150, private guided tour with stops from ₾175. Distance 157 km, travel time 2.5–3.5 hours. The route runs along the Georgian Military Highway — one of the most scenic mountain roads in the Caucasus. Full route details in our article Kazbegi Day Trip from Tbilisi 2026.
Over three years and 500+ trips, I've seen everything: tourists arriving without a jacket at the pass when it's +4°C in May, people left without return transport on a Friday evening, groups who missed Ananuri because the driver didn't stop. This guide is the concentrated version of what I tell every passenger before we set off.
What transfer options exist from Tbilisi to Kazbegi?
There are essentially three options — and each suits a different situation.
- Marshrutka (shared minibus) — cheap but with no comfort and no route stops. You travel alongside locals. Good if there are two of you and your budget is tight.
- Taxi (private car) — more comfortable than the marshrutka, and you can negotiate stops along the way. More expensive than the bus but cheaper than a tour. Works well for groups of 3–4 people.
- Private guided transfer — includes stops at Ananuri, Gudauri, and the mountain pass; commentary throughout; and help getting up to Gergeti Trinity Church. The best option if you want to actually see the road, not just survive it.

Prices are accurate as of April 2026. In summer (July–August) taxis may run ₾150–180 due to high demand. The marshrutka fare is always fixed at ₾15.
How to get to Kazbegi by marshrutka from Tbilisi?
Minibuses depart from Didube Square (Didube metro station, separate minibus bay). Timetable: 10:00 and 11:00 AM, journey time 3–3.5 hours, ₾15 per person cash. Return departures from Kazbegi: 8:00 and 10:00 AM.
How much does a taxi from Tbilisi to Kazbegi cost, and how to avoid overpaying?
Taxi to Kazbegi means hiring the whole car, not buying a seat. Via Bolt: ₾120–145, fixed price, no haggling required, though route stops are not guaranteed. Negotiating directly at Didube: the driver will open at ₾180–200; in practice you can settle at ₾120–130 with 2–3 stops included.
What is a private guided transfer and how is it different?
This is my Kazbegi in 1 Day tour — a guided experience that starts the moment you get in the car. En route I explain the history of the Georgian Military Highway, why the Ananuri Fortress was built exactly where it stands, what that Soviet-era mosaic at Gudauri actually depicts. In Kazbegi itself, I take you up to Gergeti with a trusted local 4WD driver, by the best route.
- Group size: up to 4–6 people, hotel pickup included
- Route: Tbilisi → Ananuri → Jvari Pass → Gudauri → Kazbegi → Gergeti → Tbilisi
- Duration: 10–11 hours · Price: from ₾175 per car
We booked a private transfer with Timur to Kazbegi — it turned out to be the best part of our whole trip to Georgia. Ananuri in the early morning with almost no other tourists, stopping at the pass with clouds literally below our feet, and Gergeti in the golden evening light. We couldn't have timed it like that on our own — the 10 AM marshrutka simply doesn't give you this. A special thank you for the stories along the way — Timur told them so vividly that even the children listened without looking away.
What to see along the way: Ananuri, Gudauri, the pass
The Georgian Military Highway was made for stopping. Three must-see points on the way to Kazbegi:
Ananuri — fortress above the reservoir (45 km from Tbilisi)
A 12th–18th century fortress complex overlooking the turquoise Zhinvali Reservoir. Two towers, a church with surviving frescoes, dark stone walls rising above the water. In the morning, before the tour buses arrive, it's one of the most beautiful places in all of Georgia. Entry is free.
Jvari Pass — viewpoint at 2,379 m
The Cross Pass is the highest point on the road. From here you can see several kilometres of switchbacks at once. Temperatures in May: +3 to +8°C; in July: +12 to +15°C — a jacket is non-negotiable whatever the month. More details in our guide Kazbegi Day Trip from Tbilisi 2026.
Gudauri — ski resort and panoramic viewpoint
A ski resort at 2,200 m with a circular panoramic platform overlooking the gorge, open year round. A good 15–20 minute stop — try some khinkali and tea after the pass.
How to get up to Gergeti Trinity Church?
Gergeti Trinity Church (Tsminda Sameba) stands on a rock at 2,170 m opposite Mount Kazbek (5,047 m) — the main reason everyone makes this trip. From Stepantsminda village, three options:
- On foot (free, 1.5–2 hours) — the trail starts at the bridge over the Terek, with 500 m of elevation gain. Scenic, but eats into your day on short-day trips.
- 4WD jeep (₾60–80 / car round trip) — drivers wait at the village entrance. The opening offer is ₾100 — negotiate to ₾60–70. Dirt road, 4WD required, 15–20 minutes each way.
- Combo — jeep up, walk down (~1 hour). My favourite approach: you save energy on the ascent and see the trail from a completely different angle on the way back.
Practical tips: departure time, weather, what to wear
Optimal departure: 7:00–7:30 AM. This gets you to Ananuri by 8:30 before the coaches arrive, the pass by 10:00 when skies are typically clearest, Gergeti by 13:00, and back in Tbilisi by 19:00–20:00. Leaving at 10:00 means tour buses everywhere and a return after 21:00.
What to bring: a jacket or fleece (essential — it's 10–15°C colder at the pass), comfortable shoes for the trail, cash in GEL (card readers are rare in Kazbegi), a power bank, and sunscreen.

How to get back from Kazbegi to Tbilisi?
Marshrutka: only at 8:00 and 10:00 AM — no evening services. Taxi: drivers at the central square charge ₾120–150, same as the outbound trip. On Friday and Saturday evenings supply is scarce — agree the return leg upfront with the driver who brought you. With a guided tour: departure from Kazbegi around 16:30–17:00, back in Tbilisi by 19:30–20:00, included in the price.
