The route: Georgian Military Highway
The drive from Tbilisi to Kazbegi follows the Georgian Military Highway across the Caucasus — the historic route used by traders, armies and poets for centuries, and one of the most scenic roads in Georgia. Your driver knows every turn of it.
On a private transfer the driver can stop free of charge at Zhinvali Reservoir with its turquoise water, the medieval Ananuri Fortress (XVI–XVII century), and the Friendship of Nations Arch with its Soviet mosaics at 2196m. The highest point is the Cross Pass at 2395m before the road descends to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi).
Practical tips for the transfer
- Book ahead in season: May–October is busy — reserve your car 2–3 days in advance.
- Winter road: November–April the pass can be snowy; we use winter tyres and adjust the departure to road conditions.
- One-way or round-trip: tell us if you need the driver to wait or bring you back the same day — it changes the price.
- Luggage & child seats: free luggage space; child seats on request at no extra cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a transfer from Tbilisi to Kazbegi?
The transfer costs from ₾190 per person one-way, or ₾450 for the whole car with driver (sedan up to 4, minivan up to 7). A seat in a shared shuttle is ₾40–60, and the marshrutka from Didube station is ₾15 but has no hotel pickup and a fixed schedule.
How long does the transfer take?
2.5–3 hours for the 157 km along the Georgian Military Highway, depending on weather and stops. In winter, or with photo stops at Ananuri and the Friendship Arch, allow around 3.5 hours.
Is the price one-way or round-trip?
₾190 per person and ₾450 per car are one-way prices, Tbilisi → Kazbegi or the reverse. Round-trip with waiting time or a full day with the driver is quoted on request — tell us your plan and we fix the price in advance.
Can we stop for photos along the way?
Yes. The private transfer can stop at Ananuri Fortress, Zhinvali Reservoir and the Friendship of Nations Arch at no extra charge — just ask the driver. Shared shuttles and marshrutkas do not make stops.
Driver's tip
If you plan to visit Gergeti Trinity Church in Kazbegi, leave Tbilisi in the morning — the peak of Mt. Kazbek clouds over by midday. On a round-trip transfer the driver can wait while you go up to the church (by local jeep, ₾20) and bring you back the same evening. Tell us your plan and we build the timing around it.
Skip the crowded marshrutka and the bargaining at the taxi rank. What to Bring
Comfortable shoes (there will be walking even if you take the jeep), a water bottle (I provide extra), cash GEL for lunch and souvenirs. In summer bring sunscreen and a light jacket for the mountains.
