Ureki Tour from Tbilisi — Black Sea Magnetic Sand Beach
Ureki is a Black Sea resort famous for its black magnetic sand. Its high magnetite content gives the beach a reputation for being therapeutic, while the gentle slope and warm shallow water make Ureki one of the best places in Georgia for a family seaside day. It is a long drive to the coast — a day of sea and sun far from the city.
The Magnetic Sands of Ureki
Ureki's defining feature is its black sand, rich in magnetite — it really is magnetic and is widely believed to have healing properties; "sand baths" are a local tradition.
The sand warms in the sun and gently radiates heat, so it is pleasant to lie on, and children love that it is firm rather than loose like ordinary sand.
The Beach and Relaxing
The sea at Ureki is shallow and warm with a gradual entry, which is exactly why families with young children come here. The beach is wide, with umbrellas, loungers and cafes along the shore.
This is a calm resort without Batumi's busy promenade — people come simply for the sea and the sand.
What Else Is Nearby
Near Ureki, the village of Shekvetili has a pine park and an amusement park, and there is the green area of Nasakirali. You can easily combine the beach with a short walk.
For those who want a city, Batumi is not far — Ureki can become part of a longer route through Adjara.
Timur's insider tip
On the magnetic sand it is worth trying a "sand bath" at least once — burying yourself in the warm black sand on the shore. Locals swear by it, and it feels good either way. If you are travelling with children, pick a weekday: at weekends Georgian families come to Ureki too and the beach gets noticeably busier. Bring everything you need for the sea — the value here is the long, unhurried day on the sand, not ticking off sights.
Detailed itinerary
Ureki is a long trip to the Black Sea: the drive from Tbilisi takes about 4.5 hours each way, so we leave early and keep most of the day for the beach and swimming.
The plan is flexible: you can spend the whole day on the sand, or add the Shekvetili park or a short stop on the way. On request, Ureki can become a two-day coastal trip with an overnight.
