Photography Tour Route
The tour begins 1.5 hours before sunset or sunrise — that's when the light in Tbilisi turns golden and soft. The first stop is the open terrace above Abanotubani: from here you capture the sulphur bath domes, Narikala fortress, and the Mtkvari River all in a single frame.
We then descend into the labyrinth of Old Town courtyards. The intricately carved wooden balconies, draped with grapevines and flower pots, are the visual signature of Tbilisi. Timur knows exactly which gates to enter to reach the most picturesque inner yards without tourist crowds.
The next stop is Shardeni Street — cobblestones, lanterns, cafes with open terraces — the atmosphere of a European old town with a distinctly Georgian character. We finish at the Mtatsminda viewpoint if time permits.
Who This Tour Is For
This tour works equally well for smartphone shooters and amateur camera owners. Timur will advise on exposure, angles, and working with natural light in real time. For professional photographers, he provides logistical support and access to off-limits locations that most visitors never find.
Best months for photography: April–May (cherry blossom season) and October (golden autumn). Also see: our Tbilisi travel blog for hidden spots and insider tips.
Photography Route in Detail
I build the photography tour around the light — not around the sights. That means the exact route depends on the time you choose: sunrise, evening golden hour, or another slot. The standard option is the sunset tour: we start 1.5 hours before the sun goes down.
Stop 1 — Abanotubani Viewpoint Terrace (first 20 minutes)
An open terrace above the sulphur bath district — the domed bath houses in the background, the cobbled street and old walls in the foreground. This location works best with backlit evening light: a silhouette against the sky with no tripod needed. I'll show you the exact angle — roughly 5 metres from the corner of the railing. The bath domes reflect the warm colour of the sky, giving a natural fill light on faces.
Stop 2 — Wooden Balconies of Old Town
The laneways between Sioni Street and the embankment are lined with 19th-century carved wooden balconies, flower pots and laundry lines. These are "living" shots — not staged, but genuinely street-level. The best archways are in the courtyards along Kote Afkhazi Street. There are no tourist queues here, and the locals don't mind being photographed. A wide-angle or standard 35–50mm lens works best.
Stop 3 — Narikala at Golden Hour
The 4th-century fortress walls make the best backdrop for portrait shooting at sunset. We climb up 30–40 minutes before the sun drops to secure position. The north wall gives a view over the whole of Tbilisi; the south wall offers a quieter angle with mountains on the horizon. The magic window here lasts roughly 20–25 minutes, after which we transition into the blue hour — soft, diffused light with no harsh shadows.
Stop 4 — Bridge of Peace and Embankment (dusk)
The glass-and-steel Bridge of Peace with its LED lighting switches on immediately after sunset. The best shooting position is from the embankment below (low angle, bridge and sky in frame) or from the centre of the bridge itself (symmetrical shot with the city lights and river on both sides). The Mtkvari reflects the lights beautifully — a long exposure gives elegant light trails on the water. If you're shooting on a smartphone, activate Night Mode.
Sunrise — Alternative Route
For sunrise photography we meet at Metekhi at 06:00–06:30 (exact time shifts by season). Tbilisi at this hour is completely deserted — not a soul on the streets. Mtatsminda in the morning mist, the empty embankment, Narikala in the first rays of light. No surcharge for the sunrise tour — just let me know in advance when you book.
Practical Tips
- Professional photographer: if you need a dedicated photographer, I can connect you with a trusted specialist. Rates: ₾150–200/hour including post-processing. Please arrange 2–3 days before the tour.
- Clothes for photos: neutral colours (beige, cream, olive) work well against old stone and wood. Bold patterns compete with the texture of the surroundings.
- Phone vs camera: modern flagship smartphones produce excellent results. The key is not relying purely on auto mode — I'll help you with exposure settings on the spot.
What to Bring
- Fully charged phone or camera (golden hour drains batteries fast)
- Spare battery or power bank
- Comfortable shoes — the walk up to Narikala is steep, and cobblestones are uneven
- A light jacket — it cools down by the river towards the end of the session
- A small mirror or comb — for those final touch-ups before the key shots
