Azerbaijan — a travel guide for 2026
Azerbaijan at a glance
Azerbaijan is a country of contrasts on the Caspian: futuristic Baku with its Flame Towers sits beside a medieval Old City, while mountain villages and ancient fire temples lie a few hours away.
It is an easy destination with simple entry for many nationalities and a direct neighbour of Georgia: Tbilisi and Baku are linked by train and road, so the two are easy to combine.
Visa and entry
Entry rules depend on your nationality. Russian citizens need no visa for stays of up to 90 days; many other nationalities use a quick online e-visa (ASAN Visa).
- Passport valid for the duration of your stay
- Russian citizens: visa-free up to 90 days
- Many nationalities: online e-visa (ASAN)
When to go
The best time is April to October. Spring and autumn are comfortable for exploring Baku and the regions; summer is hot but the Caspian beach season.
Mountain areas (Sheki, Gabala, Khinalug) are pleasant in summer when Baku is hot. In winter the Shahdag ski resort operates.
