Abkhazia at a glance

Abkhazia is a Black Sea region with subtropical nature, pebble beaches and mountain lakes. Visitors come for an affordable seaside break, tangerine groves and views of the Caucasus dropping straight to the sea.

The main draws are the resort of Gagra with its famous colonnade, quiet Pitsunda in its pine grove, the spiritual New Athos and the high-altitude Lake Ritsa. The holiday here is calm and family-oriented.

Visa and entry

Entry rules and crossing arrangements depend on your nationality and route, and can change — check the current requirements before you travel.

When to go

The beach season runs June to September, when the Black Sea warms to +24–26°C. July and August are the peak, warmest and busiest.

The velvet season (September) is especially pleasant: warm sea, ripe fruit and fewer visitors. Spring and autumn suit trips to the mountains and lakes without the summer heat.
