Egypt — a travel guide for 2026
Egypt at a glance
Egypt is a year-round destination: a warm Red Sea, world-class coral reefs and ancient monuments thousands of years old. Most travellers head to the beach resorts of Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh, with easy day trips to the pyramids and Luxor.
Egypt’s key advantage is steady sunshine and warm water almost all year, which is why it stays popular even in winter. Diving and snorkelling on the Red Sea are among the best in the world.
Visa and entry
Most visitors need a tourist visa, easiest obtained on arrival at the airport for around 25 US dollars, valid for 30 days. If you stay only on the Sinai resorts (Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab), a free Sinai stamp for 15 days is available.
- Passport valid at least 6 months from entry
- Visa on arrival — paid in US dollars
- The free Sinai stamp does not cover trips to the pyramids
When to go
The beach season effectively lasts all year. The most comfortable window is October to May, with air at +25–30°C and water around +24°C. Summer (June–August) is very hot, +40°C and above, especially in Luxor and Aswan.
For sightseeing at historic sites, choose the cooler months of November–March, otherwise touring the pyramids and temples in the heat becomes an ordeal.
What to see in Egypt
Pyramids of Giza & the Sphinx
The only surviving wonder of the ancient world, on the edge of Cairo. Nearby is the Grand Egyptian Museum with the treasures of Tutankhamun.
Hurghada
The most popular Red Sea resort: sandy beaches, all-inclusive hotels, diving centres and boat trips to the islands.
Sharm el-Sheikh
A Sinai resort with Egypt’s best coral reefs, gateway to Mount Sinai and Ras Mohammed National Park.
Luxor
An open-air museum: Karnak Temple, the Valley of the Kings, the Colossi of Memnon. Reached on day trips from Hurghada.
Trip budget
Approximate 2026 prices for two people:
- All-inclusive package — from €700 per week off-season
- High season (winter holidays) — €1,200–1,600
- Excursions (pyramids, Luxor) — €30–80 per person
Egypt remains one of the most affordable destinations to combine sea and history, especially with early booking.
