Detailed Activity Breakdown
Rafting on the Aragvi River. Departure from Tbilisi at 09:00. After 50 minutes you reach Mtskheta and the base camp of the rafting operator. A 30-minute safety briefing is followed by gear fitting (helmet, life jacket, paddle). The float covers 8–12 km over 2–3 hours on class II–III rapids — suitable for anyone aged 12 and above with no prior experience. Key rapids include "Mtskheta" and "Aragvi" sections with several enjoyable riffles in between. Cost: ₾80–100 per person including transfer and equipment. Season: May–October. River temperature: +15–20°C.
Trekking to Abudelauri Lakes. Base: Kazbegi (Stepantsminda). Start at 08:00. The route is 22 km round trip with 900 m of elevation gain, finishing at 2,836 m above sea level. Three lakes — white, green, and black — owe their colors to the different mineral composition of their beds. The trail is not technical, but it is long: 6–8 hours in total. A moderate base level of fitness is recommended. Lunch options: packed sandwiches or food available at shepherd huts along the high pastures.
Paragliding in Gudauri. Departure from Tbilisi at 09:00. Gudauri is 120 km away; the launch site sits at 2,200 m. A tandem flight lasts 15–25 minutes, landing in the valley below. No prior experience required. Cost: ₾150–200 per person, including a video recording of your flight. Season: March–November. If winds are strong, the flight is rescheduled — the guide checks conditions the evening before.
Jeep tour through Truso Gorge. Departure from Kazbegi at 09:00. A 30 km drive along unpaved roads climbs to 2,800 m. Abandoned villages, bright red mineral springs coloured by iron oxide deposits, and the distant Ortsveri Glacier make this one of Georgia's most photogenic off-road routes. The route requires a proper 4WD vehicle (Toyota Land Cruiser or equivalent). Duration: 4–5 hours. Cost: ₾200–250 per vehicle (4 people).
Practical Tips
- Rafting and paragliding depend on weather — book with a backup day in mind to allow for rescheduling.
- For the Abudelauri trek, proper hiking boots with ankle support are essential — at 2,800 m the terrain is rocky and uneven.
- "Adventure sports" travel insurance in Georgia costs around ₾10–15 per day — arrange it online in advance.
What to Pack
- Hiking boots with a stiff sole and ankle support
- Layered clothing: base layer, fleece mid-layer, windproof outer shell
- Gloves and a warm hat — above 2,200 m it gets cold even in summer
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ — UV intensity is roughly twice as high at altitude
- Phone with a fully charged battery and offline maps (Maps.me)
