Best Time to Visit Batumi
The best time is June–September, when the water warms to +25°C. May and October are also lovely but too cool for swimming. In winter Batumi is beautiful and uncrowded — just don't expect the beach.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1. 07:30 — departure from Tbilisi. The Tbilisi–Batumi highway (330 km). 10:00 — stop in Gori for coffee and a look at Goristsikhe fortress on the hill. 12:00 — Borjomi: 30 minutes at the mineral springs in the national park — you can drink directly from the taps, each spring has a distinct mineral taste. 14:30 — arrival in Batumi. Check in to the hotel near the seafront (I recommend the zone between Rustaveli Avenue and the beach — 10 minutes walk to the sea). 16:00 — walk along Batumi Boulevard: 7 km hugging the Black Sea. Ferris wheel at the far end of the promenade, Alphabet Tower (130 m, lift ₾3). 19:30 — dinner at Piazza Square with a view of the fountain and city hall. The square is small but the atmosphere is straight out of an Italian town. I recommend the fish restaurant with a terrace on the second floor.
Day 2. 09:00 — breakfast at the hotel. 10:00 — Gonio Fortress (18 km from Batumi, 15 minutes by car). A Roman fortress from the 1st century AD with 22 towers and a 900-metre perimeter. According to legend, the Apostle Matthew is buried here. Entrance ₾3. 12:00 — Batumi Botanical Garden (5 km from the centre, bus #31 or taxi ₾5). 113 hectares of subtropical plants, a Japanese garden, bamboo grove. Ticket ₾15. 14:30 — lunch in Batumi with traditional Adjarian food: Adjarian khachapuri (flatbread boat with egg and butter), or muta (aubergine with walnuts). 16:00 — departure for Tbilisi. Arrival around 21:00–22:00.

Timur's Tip
Don't plan Batumi as a day trip — the drive alone is 10 hours round-trip. A minimum of 2 days and 1 night is essential. If you want to save time on the return, I'll drive you there and you can take the overnight train back (₾35, sleeping compartment) — it's actually a great experience. In summer, book your hotel early — good rooms near the sea fill up fast.
