Batumi is Georgia's resort capital, but the most interesting part begins beyond the promenade. Half an hour from the sea lies mountain Adjara with waterfalls and old arched bridges, and further on — ancient fortresses and subtropical gardens. Day trips from Batumi with a private guide let you see the real Adjara in one day: no car rental, no route planning — you are picked up right at your hotel on the coast.
Day Trips from Batumi with a Private Guide
Holidaying on the coast? We pick you up at your hotel and show you mountain Adjara, waterfalls and fortresses — with a private guide
What we see from Batumi
In one day you can realistically combine 3–4 stops — for example, Makhuntseti waterfall with Tamar Bridge, Gonio Fortress and the Botanical Garden, or the whole of mountain Adjara up to Green Lake. Timur will tailor the route to your pace and the weather.
Why take a day trip from Batumi
Most visitors spend their whole holiday in Batumi on the promenade and the beach without ever seeing the real Adjara. Yet 30–60 km from the sea there is Makhuntseti waterfall, the medieval Queen Tamar Bridge, Green Lake in the mountains and the Roman fortress of Gonio. A day trip from Batumi turns one beach day into a real journey deep into the region. Want to go further? See the Batumi–Kutaisi day trip with canyons.
Timur's tip: how to plan a day from Batumi
It is best to head into mountain Adjara in the morning, before the heat builds up on the coast — in the mountains it is always 5–7 degrees cooler and the air is fresh. In summer you can swim in the river at Makhuntseti waterfall, so bring a swimsuit. On the way we will definitely stop for a tasting: Adjarians make wine right in their yards, and the homemade chacha here is special. In the evening I will bring you back to the sea — just in time for sunset on the promenade.

Mountain Adjara: what makes it special
The main reason to go from Batumi into the mountains is the contrast. In just half an hour you climb from the subtropical coast into the green gorges of the Acharistskali river. Almost every route starts at Makhuntseti waterfall: a powerful 30-metre cascade reached by a short path, and in summer you can swim in the mountain river below. A couple of minutes away is the arched Queen Tamar Bridge, one of dozens of stone bridges built in Adjara in the 11th–12th centuries; it still stands without a single nail or mortar. The road then winds up to Green Lake (Mtsvane Tba) and on towards high-mountain Khulo with its cable car. Along the way are villages where Adjarians make homemade wine and chacha and gladly treat their guests. This is the living, unpolished Georgia you cannot see from the Batumi promenade.
Batumi as a base
Batumi is convenient because several very different routes start from it. To the south, towards the Turkish border, is Gonio-Apsaros Fortress, a 2nd-century Roman fort and one of the oldest in Georgia. To the north along the sea are the resort of Kobuleti and the black magnetic sand beaches of Ureki. Into the mountains — all of Adjara with its waterfalls and bridges. And two hours to the east begins Western Georgia with the canyons and caves around Kutaisi. From Batumi you can see mountains, history and natural wonders in one holiday — without moving to a new town each time. The guide picks you up right at your hotel on the coast, so you need neither a car nor any logistics planning.
When to visit mountain Adjara
May–June. Makhuntseti at full flow, lush greenery in the gorges, comfortable mountain temperatures. The best time for waterfalls and bridges.
July–August. Hot on the coast, but fresh in the mountains of Adjara. Swimming in the river by the waterfall is especially pleasant, and Green Lake is a refuge from the heat.
September–October. Grape harvest season — rtveli is under way in the villages and tastings are at their most generous. Soft sun and clear air for photos.
November–April. The coast, Gonio Fortress and the Botanical Garden are open all year. High mountain roads to Khulo may close in snow — we will adjust the route.

Popular routes from Batumi
Mountain Adjara (full day). The classic: Makhuntseti waterfall, Queen Tamar Bridge, Green Lake, homemade wine and chacha tasting in a village. The most scenic and most requested option.
Gonio Fortress and the south (half day). The 2nd-century Roman fort of Gonio-Apsaros, where by tradition the Apostle Matthias is buried, and the road to the Turkish border. A compact route, good for a short stay.
Botanical Garden and Mtsvane Kontskhi (half day). One of the largest botanical gardens in the post-Soviet space — 111 hectares of plants from all over the world on cliffs above the sea, with views of the coast. A relaxed walk for families and nature lovers.
Western Georgia — Kutaisi (full day). A long but vivid trip: Martvili and Okatse canyons, Prometheus Cave, Gelati and Bagrati monasteries. About two hours each way, so we leave earlier.
Batumi Botanical Garden: what to see
The Batumi Botanical Garden, 9 km north of the city on Green Cape (Mtsvane Kontskhi), deserves special attention. Founded in 1912, it brings together plants from nine climate zones — from the Japanese and Himalayan sections to the Australian and North American ones. The paths run along slopes right above the sea, and the upper terraces offer one of the best views of the Adjara coast. Allow 2–3 hours for an unhurried walk; the garden combines well with Gonio or works as a separate half day. Entry is about ₾17, cheaper for children and students.
