The canyons of Western Georgia: how they differ
The main reason to travel from Kutaisi is three different canyons within half an hour of each other, each giving its own impression. Martvili is a water trip: you board a rubber boat and float down the emerald gorge of the Abasha River between sheer moss-covered cliffs, past small waterfalls. The Dadiani princes once bathed here — the water stays cool even in summer. Okatse is the opposite: height and adrenaline. A metal hanging balcony-trail is fixed to the cliff about 140 metres up, and you walk above the abyss for almost a kilometre. Nearby is Kinchkha, one of the highest waterfalls in Georgia. Prometheus Cave takes you underground: 1.7 kilometres of lit galleries with stalactites, an underground river and a boat ride in the dark. Kutaisi as a starting point
David the Builder Kutaisi International Airport (code KUT) is the main budget-airline hub in Georgia. Wizz Air flies here from dozens of cities, and tickets are often cheaper than to Tbilisi or Batumi. The one downside: the airport sits in open fields 20 km from the city, and Tbilisi is a 4-hour drive away. Most travellers spend their arrival day on the road. An excursion from Kutaisi solves this differently: the guide meets you right at the airport exit, your luggage travels with you, and instead of a dull transfer you find yourself straight in the canyons. When to visit the canyons of Kutaisi
April–June. Full rivers, powerful waterfalls, greenery around the canyons — the best time for Martvili and Kinchkha. Warm during the day, but not hot.
July–August. Hot in the valley, but the cool water of Martvili is especially pleasant. Prometheus Cave is a rescue in the heat — underground it's about +14 °C all year round.
September–October. Soft sun, fewer tourists, clear air for photos on the Okatse hanging trail. One of the best seasons.
November–March. The canyons stay open, but the Okatse hanging trail can close in rain and ice. Prometheus Cave and Gelati are accessible year-round.
