What you'll see between Batumi and Kutaisi
The main value of this trip is three completely different natural sites on one route. Martvili Canyon is a water trip: you board a boat and float down the emerald gorge of the Abasha River between moss-covered cliffs, past small waterfalls. The Dadiani princely family once bathed here. Okatse Canyon is about height: a metal hanging trail is fixed to the cliff around 140 metres up, and nearby Kinchkha waterfall drops — one of the tallest in the country. Prometheus Cave leads 1.7 kilometres underground — lit galleries with stalactites, an underground river and a boat in the dark. And the day ends in Kutaisi — the ancient capital of Colchis with UNESCO-listed Gelati Monastery and the majestic Bagrati Cathedral on the hill above the city.
The drive from Batumi: how long and how the day goes
From Batumi to the canyon area is about 140 kilometres, roughly two hours on good roads along the coast and then inland. We leave in the morning to reach the main stops without rushing, and make a coffee stop on the way. The drive is part of the route: the subtropics of Adjara, tea plantations and foothills change past the window. During the day — canyons, the cave and Kutaisi, and in the evening a calm return to the sea. Total duration is 10–11 hours, of which about four are the round-trip drive. It's a comfortable "one active day" format in the middle of a beach holiday.
When to go
April–June. Full rivers and waterfalls, lush greenery around the canyons. Ideal for Martvili and Kinchkha; the valley is warm but not exhausting.
July–August. Peak season in Batumi. The cool water of Martvili and Prometheus Cave (+14 °C year-round) are especially pleasant in the heat — a great contrast to the beach.
September–October. Soft sun, fewer tourists, clear air for photos on the Okatse hanging trail. One of the best seasons for this trip.
November–March. The canyons stay open, but the Okatse hanging trail can close in rain and ice. In the low season we focus on Prometheus Cave and Kutaisi, open year-round.
