About Samegrelo

Samegrelo, or Mingrelia, is western Georgia at its most distinctive. The region stretches between the Colchis Lowland by the Black Sea and the Greater Caucasus foothills, where subtropical humidity gives way to mountain air. The capital is Zugdidi, a city of about seventy thousand, roughly 330 km from Tbilisi. Administratively Samegrelo adjoins Upper Svaneti, and the only road to Mestia's tower villages passes through Zugdidi.

Mingrelians are a Kartvelian people speaking their own language, which neighboring Georgians generally don't understand despite both languages belonging to the same family. Mingrelian lives in daily life, at the market, in families — it's not a dialect but a full language with a written tradition. Mingrelians take pride in their distinctness: separate history, separate cuisine and the Dadiani princes who ruled Mingrelia as an independent state for centuries. Total regional population: about three hundred thousand.

Mingrelian cuisine is the spiciest in Georgia, and that's no exaggeration. Local adjika has nothing in common with jarred tomato paste: it's hand-made from fresh or sun-dried red pepper, garlic, coriander, fenugreek and walnuts, ground on stone. The result is a dark-red spicy paste added to literally every dish. Gebzhalia — a roll of young Imeretian cheese with mint and cream filling — is one of Georgia's most delicate cheeses. Elarji is cornmeal porridge with so much suluguni mixed in during cooking it stretches like molten rubber. Mingrelian khachapuri differs from Imeretian in that cheese goes not just inside the dough but is also sprinkled on top before serving.

The Dadiani Palace in Zugdidi holds one of Napoleon Bonaparte's three death masks — an artifact that reached Mingrelia through the marriage of Ekaterine Dadiani to Marshal Murat's grandson. Samegrelo's subtropical forests are part of the Colchis National Park — a UNESCO site. Martvili Canyon with its emerald water draws tourists from across Georgia annually. And from Zugdidi begins the road through the Enguri gorge to Svaneti — the most impressive mountain highway in the Caucasus.

What to See in Samegrelo

Dadiani Palace — Zugdidi

The palace of Mingrelia's rulers, built in neo-Gothic style in the 19th century, is now one of Georgia's finest regional museums. Star exhibit: Napoleon Bonaparte's death mask — one of only three authentic ones in the world, it ended up here after Ekaterine Dadiani married Achille Murat, grandson of Marshal Joachim Murat. Palace halls display medieval manuscripts, Georgian weapons, jewelry and church artifacts from the Dadiani era. Museum entry 15 lari. The palace botanical garden deserves a separate hour: centuries-old magnolias, sequoias, bamboo groves and rare subtropical trees that stay green in winter. The garden was laid out in the mid-19th century following European park designs.

Martvili Canyon

A gorge of the Abasha River with impossibly emerald water — arguably the most photographed spot in Georgia. The canyon splits into two sections: the lower, where tourists ride wooden boats between sheer 30-meter cliffs, and the upper — a walking trail past waterfalls where you'll get splashed. The canyon's limestone preserves dinosaur traces found by paleontologists. Technically Martvili sits on the Samegrelo-Imereti border, but historically belonged to Mingrelia, and most tours come from Zugdidi. Best time: April-June, when snowmelt feeds the waterfalls and water color is most vivid.

Nokalakevi — Colchian Fortress

An ancient fortified city on the Tekhuri River — one of Georgia's least visited and most atmospheric archaeological sites. Known in ancient sources as Archaeopolis. Legend says the Argonauts sought the Golden Fleece at the Rioni's mouth where the Tekhuri flows in — and Nokalakevi claims to be that mythical Colchian capital. Excavations revealed continuous cultural layers from the Bronze Age to the Early Middle Ages: foundations of Colchian kings' palace, Roman baths, Byzantine-style basilica, Georgian towers. Entry 3 lari; almost no tourists — you can wander in silence among two-thousand-year-old stones.

Okatse Canyon

The Okatse River canyon with a suspended walkway over the abyss — simultaneously beautiful and slightly terrifying. An 800-meter steel bridge is anchored directly into the cliff above a 70-meter drop: you literally walk over the turquoise river. Technically in Imereti, but most tours from Zugdidi combine it with Martvili in one day. Entry 10 lari. Nearby — the Kinchkha natural bridge, 40 meters high, carved by water in limestone.

Lake Tobavarchkhili — Silver Lake

A high-mountain lake at 2,650 meters — "silver" for the milky-gray color of its mineral-rich water. One of Samegrelo's most remote and beautiful places: reachable only on foot, the trek takes 2-3 days each way from Mukhuri village. The trail passes through alpine meadows, past cliffs and passes, revealing Greater Caucasus ridge views. Around the lake — absolute silence, clean air and no mobile signal. Route suitable only for physically fit hikers with full gear. Access window: July-August.

Enguri Dam and the Road to Svaneti

The Enguri hydroelectric dam is Georgia's largest and one of the world's tallest arch dams: 271 meters high. The dam locks the Enguri River in a narrow gorge, forming a blue reservoir. The road from Zugdidi to Mestia passes the dam — 3-4 hours on asphalt along the Enguri, through a tunnel and past the first Svan towers. This is where Svaneti begins to feel real: the landscape changes rapidly, the valley narrows, slopes become vertical.

Anaklia — Black Sea Resort

Anaklia is a young beach resort on the Black Sea shore, at the border of Samegrelo and Abkhazia. A long promenade with cafes, a good pebble beach, clean sea water and none of Batumi's crowds. Unobstructed sunsets over the sea. Easy to include on a route from Zugdidi — twenty minutes by car. Nearby is Colchis National Park with boat tours through swampy ancient forests.

When to Visit and What to Bring

Best time: May-June and September-October. Samegrelo is subtropical: summers are hot and humid (+34-36°C with high humidity), winters mild (+5-10°C) but overcast and rainy. Spring brings blooming magnolias in the botanical garden and full Martvili waterfalls. Autumn brings cooler, clearer air. Tobavarchkhili trek: exclusively July-August when passes are snow-free.

What to bring: light clothing and raincoat (high humidity even without rain), closed shoes for canyons and fortress, scarf for the palace. You'll get splashed at Martvili Canyon — pack a change of clothes. Cash lari — ATMs in Zugdidi but cards won't work en route to Nokalakevi or in small villages.

Mingrelian food on site: visit Zugdidi's central market for fresh adjika, smoked suluguni and Svan salt. The city has several good restaurants with Mingrelian menus — ask for gebzhalia and elarji; if they're not on the menu, you're in the wrong place.
