Kazbegi tour route — stops along the way

The Georgian Military Highway — 212 km of history and nature from Tbilisi to the Russian border.

1

Ananuri Fortress (60 km from Tbilisi)

A 12th–17th-century fortress on the shore of the Zhinvali Reservoir. Two towers, an old church with frescoes and a panoramic viewpoint over turquoise water. The fortress guarded the roads to Tbilisi from the Caucasus side. Free entry. The first must-stop on the road to Kazbegi — 30–40 minutes.

2

Zhinvali Reservoir

Turquoise-green water in a mountain valley — a view that is hard to put into words. The reservoir is man-made, created in 1984. The medieval village of Zhinvali lies beneath the water — in dry years the ruins of towers rise above the surface. The best views are from the road 1–2 km past Ananuri.

3

Gudauri (100 km)

A ski resort at 2,196 m. In winter it is a must-stop: 70 km of runs, lifts and views of the Main Caucasus Range. In summer there is a viewpoint above the Aragvi Valley with a paragliding launch. Gudauri is +15–18°C in summer — a chance to step out and breathe mountain air after the Tbilisi heat.

4

Stepantsminda (Kazbegi, 157 km)

The town at the foot of Mt Kazbek. About 2,000 people live here, most of them working in tourism. You'll find guesthouses, restaurants with Kazbek views and gear rental. From the town centre to Gergeti Trinity it is 1.5 hours on foot or 15 minutes by jeep. Stay overnight and you'll watch Kazbek at sunrise from your window.

5

Gergeti Trinity (2,170 m)

The 14th-century Holy Trinity Church is Georgia's most photographed spot. It stands on a green hill at 2,170 m with Mt Kazbek (5,047 m) behind it. Inside are medieval frescoes and relics that survived the wars. Free entry. In July–August there are queues for jeeps. The best time is 7–9 am or after 17:00.

6

Dariali Gorge

North of Stepantsminda, the Terek gorge runs towards the Russian border. Sheer cliffs 400–500 m high and Dariali Monastery set into the rock. One of the narrowest passages through the Caucasus range — a branch of the Great Silk Road ran right here. On request, it can be added to the standard Kazbegi tour.

When to go to Kazbegi

The road is open all year — and Kazbegi looks different in every season.

🌱

Spring (April–May)

Snow on the peaks, green slopes, the first flowers. Few tourists. Sometimes the road up to Gergeti Trinity is still closed — on foot only. The best time for anyone who prefers Kazbegi without the crowds.

☀

Summer (June–August)

Green alpine meadows and Mt Kazbek in full view. July–August is the peak: queues of tourists up to Gergeti Trinity. An early start saves the day. Temperatures in Kazbegi: +18–22°C — perfect after the Tbilisi heat.

🍂

Autumn (September–October)

Golden slopes and red shrubs on the flanks of Kazbek. The best light for photos. Fewer tourists. September is the most beautiful month. Nights are already cold (0–5°C), days are warm.

❄

Winter (November–March)

Snowy Kazbegi — cosy and atmospheric. Gudauri on the way runs as a ski resort. Kazbegi is completely white. The road is open (in winter it closes only during avalanche risk). Almost no tourists.

Altitude sickness — should you worry?

Gergeti Trinity is at 2,170 m. At this altitude most people feel no discomfort at all. Mild signs of altitude sickness (headache, slight dizziness) are possible only for people above 2,000 m for the first time. Drink plenty of water, take it slow — and you'll be fine. Climbing Mt Kazbek (5,047 m) is mountaineering and is not part of the tour.
