Georgia's weather by summer month

Georgia is big — cool in the mountains, hot in Tbilisi, warm by the sea. Plan accordingly.

🌱

June — the mountains open

Tbilisi: +28–32°C. Kazbegi and Gudauri: +15–20°C. Svaneti and Tusheti open up — the roads are cleared. Batumi: sea at +20°C, people are already swimming. The best month for mountain tours — before the summer peak.

☀

July — peak season

Tbilisi: +36–40°C. In the mountains: +20–25°C — comfortable. Sea: +24°C. The busiest month. Book a guide 2–3 weeks ahead. Mountain routes are the perfect escape from the hot capital.

☀

August — mountains and sea

Tbilisi is scorching (+38°C), so most people head to the mountains or to Batumi. Svaneti is at its most beautiful — green meadows, snowy peaks. Sea: +25–26°C, the warmest. High season, high prices.

🍂

September — the golden time

Tbilisi: +25°C. Mountains: the leaves are turning yellow. Sea: still warm (+22–24°C). Fewer tourists. Kakheti: the harvest and rtveli (grape harvest festival) begin. The best month for every route at once.

Timur's tip for a summer itinerary

A classic 7-day summer plan: 2 days in Tbilisi (morning walks + evening neighbourhoods), 1 day in Kazbegi, 1 day in Kakheti, 2 days in Batumi, 1 free day. If you want mountain Georgia, swap Batumi for 4 days in Svaneti and add a few more days.

Mountains or sea: what to choose in summer

Georgia offers both — and that is one of the main reasons to visit in summer.

1

Kazbegi: mountains in 1 day

Gergeti Trinity at 2,170 m is a symbol of Georgia. In summer the slopes are green, the sky is blue and Mt Kazbek (5,047 m) is capped with snow. It is the most popular day trip from Tbilisi — and for good reason. Departure at 9:00, back around 21:00. Along the Georgian Military Highway — one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the Caucasus.

2

Svaneti: the world of Svan towers

Mestia and Ushguli are medieval tower villages on the UNESCO list. In summer the drive from Zugdidi takes 3–4 hours. Ushguli is the highest permanently inhabited settlement in Europe (2,200 m). The Chalaadi glacier and flowering alpine meadows. At least 4 days — otherwise it's just the car and hotels.

3

Tusheti: only for the bold

The Abano Pass (2,926 m) is one of the highest drivable passes in the Caucasus. The medieval towers of Omalo, the village of Shenako with views above the clouds. Tusheti is open 3–4 months a year. Only a 4×4 jeep, only an experienced driver, only in summer. This is not a bus tour — it's a real adventure.

4

Batumi: the sea and the subtropics

Georgia's Black Sea coast feels like a different country. A humid subtropical climate, palm trees, tangerines, Adjarian cuisine. The sea warms up to +24–26°C in July–August. The Botanical Garden has 2,000 plant species. If you want the sea, Batumi is a full-fledged beach holiday with Georgian character.

5

Truso Valley: wild nature

A little-known valley near Kazbegi — colourful mineral springs, a quiet glacier, a medieval church. Only 30 km from Kazbegi, yet with ten times fewer tourists. In summer the springs are bright orange from the iron, and the streams are crystal clear. Can be added to the standard Kazbegi tour or done as a separate route.

6

Tbilisi in summer: mornings and evenings

In July–August Tbilisi reaches +36–38°C during the day — walking is hard. The right rhythm: the Old Town and the Abanotubani sulfur baths at 9–11 am, lunch in a cool cellar restaurant, a rest, then an evening stroll along Rustaveli after 19:00. Narikala Fortress is best in the evening, with the lights on. Your guide plans the route around the heat.

How to escape the summer heat in Tbilisi

In July–August Tbilisi is one of the hottest cities in Europe. Three strategies that work.

☀

Morning and evening schedule

Walks around the Old Town, Rustaveli and Avlabari — only from 8 to 11 am and after 18:00. In the middle of the day (12:00–17:00): lunch somewhere cool, the baths, a rest at the hotel.

Abanotubani sulfur baths — +22°C inside
⛰

Head to the mountains

Kazbegi and Svaneti are +18–22°C in summer — cool and fresh. A day trip to Kazbegi is a rescue from the Tbilisi heat. In the mountains you can breathe.

Kazbegi: from ₾175 — 1 day
🌊

Head to the sea

Batumi is 315 km from Tbilisi — 4.5 hours by car with a guide. The humid subtropical climate is easier to bear than the dry heat of the capital. Sea at +24°C. A trip with an overnight stay, 2 days.

Batumi: from ₾250 — 1 day
🛂

Abanotubani sulfur baths

Tbilisi's historic bath district — domed buildings over hot sulfur springs (+37°C). A private room with your own bath. Cool outside, hot inside. Stress relief and recovery.

from ₾20 / hour / room
