Why Georgia is ideal for families with children

A few reasons why Georgia ranks among the top family destinations.

Safety, food and a warm attitude to children

Georgia ranks among the safest countries in the region. Street crime is minimal, and tourists walk around Tbilisi at night without fear. For families with children this matters a lot: you can stroll through the Old Town in the evening and wander into narrow lanes without extra caution.

Georgian food is paradise for kids. Khachapuri (cheese bread), khinkali (juicy dumplings), churchkhela (a Georgian sweet made from nuts and grape juice) — children love all of them. Most restaurants in Tbilisi have a kids' menu or let you order a half portion.

Culturally, Georgians are very warm towards little ones. A stranger at the market may offer your child a taste of something, give them a tangerine or start a chat. It creates a friendly atmosphere that's hard to find in Europe. Young travellers feel it — and feel at home here.

What kids love in Georgia

Specific activities and places that children remember for a long time.

🚜

The funicular to Mtatsminda

The old funicular climbs the mountain above Tbilisi. The view over the whole city is unforgettable. At the top there's an amusement park. Kids are thrilled.

🏭

Narikala Fortress

A real medieval fortress with towers, walls and panoramic views. Children can climb the ruins — safely, but with a sense of adventure.

🍎

The market and churchkhela

A tasting at the market — fruit, nuts, cheese, churchkhela fresh from the pot. The guide explains how the traditional sweet is made. Young travellers love it.

🏝

Uplistsikhe cave town

A town carved into the rock 3,000 years ago. Children aged 8+ explore caves, tunnels and halls. A real quest through history.

⛰

The mountains of Kazbegi

For children aged 10+ — a trip to the foot of Kazbek, a church at 2,170 m, mountain rivers. One of the brightest days of a child's life.

💧

Borjomi springs

Mineral water straight from the spring in Borjomi Park. Kids drink the mineral water, walk in the forest and swim in the summer season.

Recommendations by children's age

Not every route suits every age equally. Here are some guidelines.

0–4

Little ones under 4

Short walks in Tbilisi — up to 2 hours. The funicular (with a stroller — needs checking). The market. The Old Town on foot within your child's stamina. We don't recommend long trips.

5–9

Children aged 5–9

Tbilisi (the kids' or family tour), Mtskheta, Borjomi. Uplistsikhe (the cave town) is excellent. We don't recommend Kazbegi: a long drive and high altitude. Mtskheta in half a day is ideal.

10+

Children aged 10+

All routes are open, including Kazbegi, Kakheti and Svaneti. Teenagers especially love Kazbegi (mountains, altitude, a church on a cliff) and Gori (the fortress, the caves). A full-day programme is no problem.

Questions

General tips

Bring water and a light snack. In summer — hats and sunscreen. Closed shoes for fortresses and caves. The guide always adapts the pace — don't hesitate to ask for a break.

Questions about Georgia tours with kids

Is it safe to bring children to Georgia?
Georgia is one of the safest countries for family travel. Low crime, a warm attitude to children, good-quality food. Guide Timur adapts the route to your children's ages and keeps an eye on the pace and comfort of the whole family.
From what age can children join tours?
From any age. For little ones under 5 — short walks in Tbilisi (1.5–2 hours, with the funicular and the market). Children aged 6–12 handle Mtskheta and Borjomi well. From 12, teenagers easily manage Kazbegi too. The programme is built around your children's ages and stamina.
Is there a discount for children?
Yes. Children under 2 join the tour for free. From age 2 the price is the same as for adults. Please give your children's ages when booking, or mention them when you write on WhatsApp.
Which route should we choose with children aged 7–10?
The best option is the family tour of Tbilisi (the funicular, Narikala, a market with tastings) plus a day trip to Borjomi or Mtskheta. Borjomi: a nature park, mineral water, walks — great for kids of any age. Mtskheta: a monastery and a fortress in half a day. Neither route involves tiring transfers.
How does the guide adapt the programme for children?
Guide Timur slows the walking pace and adds interactive stops (shows how a mill works, explains how the fortress was built, treats you to churchkhela). The story changes with age: a fairy-tale format for little ones, history with facts and riddles for schoolchildren. No long monologues or boring dates.
Are there places in Tbilisi made especially for children?
Yes. Mtatsminda Park — rides, a Ferris wheel, panoramic views (via the funicular). Rike Park — a children's area by the Bridge of Peace. Tbilisi Zoo. The Georgian National Museum — a hall of knights' armour and weapons. The guide adds these stops to the family route on request.
