Georgia is a mountain country: the Greater Caucasus range, five-thousand-metre peaks, alpine meadows and glaciers begin just a few hours from Tbilisi. You don't need to be an athlete to see them. A hike in the mountains of Georgia with an English-speaking guide is a chance to walk a real Caucasus trail at your own pace — from an easy climb to the Gergeti Trinity Church to a full-day trek in Juta or the Truso valley. Timur picks the route to match your level, sorts the transfer and safety, and tells the story of the peaks, villages and old churches along the way.

In short: Hiking in the Mountains of Georgia — from ₾190 per person, up to 7 people. Route includes Gergeti Trinity Church (2170 m), Juta and the Chaukhi valley, Truso valley. Private guide from Sakhva Travel, direct booking with no agency fees.

Where we hike in the mountains of Georgia

Easy
Gergeti Trinity Church (2170 m)
A short climb above Stepantsminda to a 14th-century church against Mount Kazbek. The classic postcard of Georgia — doable for almost anyone.
Medium
Juta and the Chaukhi valley
Alpine meadows, a mountain river and the jagged Chaukhi massif. A full day among peaks with no serious climbing.
Medium
Truso valley
Mineral springs, travertine terraces, abandoned towers and the Georgian– Ossetian border. A wide, gentle valley with grand views.
Harder
Gergeti glacier and viewpoints
A climb above the church toward the glacier of Kazbek for the fit — snowy peaks up close and a real high-mountain feel.
Multi-day
Svaneti and Tusheti
Mestia–Ushguli, medieval tower villages and remote Tusheti trails. Best over two to three days — ask and we'll plan it.

Most one-day hikes are in the Kazbegi area — it's the closest real mountains to Tbilisi. Tell us your fitness and time, and Timur will choose the route that fits.

Why hike with a guide

In the mountains the weather turns in minutes, trails aren't always marked and the road to the trailhead can need a 4x4. A licensed guide takes all of that off your plate: he chooses a safe route for your level, watches the weather, sorts the transfer and turns a walk into a story about the Caucasus. You just walk and enjoy the views. Doing the Kazbegi area? See our Kazbegi day trip from Tbilisi too.

Timur's tip for your first mountain hike

Don't overrate the difficulty, but don't underrate the mountains either. For a first hike the Gergeti church or Juta is plenty — beautiful and not exhausting. Wear proper shoes with grip, take a warm layer (it's cold at altitude even in July) and drink water often. We start early to be back in the valley before an afternoon thunderstorm — that's the usual mountain weather here.

Which hike to choose for your level

You don't need mountain experience to hike in Georgia — you need the right route. For a first hike the climb to the Gergeti Trinity Church is ideal: a couple of hours uphill above Stepantsminda, and Mount Kazbek opens up in front of you. If you want a full day among the peaks without technical climbing, Juta and the Chaukhi valley is the answer — alpine meadows, a river and the sharp Chaukhi wall. The Truso valley is an easy but long walk past mineral springs and old towers. And for the fit there's the route toward the Gergeti glacier, where it already feels like high mountains. Timur helps you pick honestly, so the day is a joy and not a struggle.

How a one-day hike from Tbilisi goes

We leave Tbilisi early and drive north along the famous Georgian Military Road — about three hours with stops at the Ananuri fortress, the Jinvali reservoir and the Russia–Georgia Friendship monument with its view of the Devil's Valley. By late morning we reach Stepantsminda (Kazbegi), the base for the mountain routes. Then comes the hike itself — from two to six hours depending on the trail — with breaks for photos and rest. In the evening we drive back to Tbilisi. The whole day takes 10–12 hours, and you return with the Caucasus in your legs and your camera.

When to hike in the mountains of Georgia

June–September. The main hiking season. The passes are clear of snow, the meadows are in flower, all routes — Juta, Truso, the glacier — are open. The best time for the mountains.

May and October. Shoulder season: fewer people, crisp air, but snow can still linger high up. Great for the Gergeti church and easier trails.

November–April. The high routes close, but a winter trip to Kazbegi with snowy peaks and the Gergeti church in the snow is spectacular. We swap trekking for a scenic drive and short walks.

What's included in the price of a hike

A one-day hike in the mountains of Georgia costs from ₾190 per person. The price includes transfer from Tbilisi to the Kazbegi area and back, an English-speaking licensed guide for the whole day, a route chosen for your level, safety support on the trail and all photo stops. A 4x4 transfer to the Juta or Truso trailhead (if the route needs it), lunch and snacks and personal gear are paid separately. Booking is via WhatsApp with a 10% deposit and free cancellation up to 24 hours before the hike.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need hiking experience?

No. We pick a route to match your level — from an easy walk to the Gergeti church to a full-day trek in Juta or Truso. Just tell us your fitness and Timur builds the day around it.

Which mountains do you hike?

Most often the Kazbegi area (Gergeti, Juta, Truso valley) — the most accessible from Tbilisi in a day. On a multi-day trip we also go to Svaneti and the Tusheti trails.

What should I bring for the hike?

Comfortable trainers or trekking shoes, a light windbreaker, water and sunscreen. Weather changes fast in the mountains, so a warm layer is worth it even in summer. Timur sends a full checklist before the trip.

Is a one-day hike from Tbilisi possible?

Yes. We leave early, drive to Kazbegi (about 3 hours), hike during the day and return in the evening. For deeper routes in Svaneti we recommend two or three days.

How much does a hike in the mountains of Georgia cost?

From ₾190 per person for a one-day hike in the Kazbegi area. The price includes transfer from Tbilisi and back, an English-speaking licensed guide and route support. Meals and any 4x4 transfer are paid separately.
