In short: in October Tbilisi averages 19 °C by day and 10 °C at night, Batumi 21 °C, and the sea is still 22–23 °C in the first half of the month. Kakheti is in the middle of rtveli, the grape harvest, and Kazbegi has golden slopes at around 11 °C by day. There are fewer tourists than in summer and the weather is steadier than in November. October suits almost any route except high-mountain hikes late in the month.

October is when everything lines up in Georgia: still warm but not hot, the harvest is on in Kakheti, the mountains turn gold and the summer crowds go home. Below are the answers to what guests ask me most: the weather in each region, where to swim, how to join rtveli and how the end of the month differs.

Air temperatures and rainy days are 2014–2023 averages from the Open-Meteo archive.

Averages for 2014–2023. In the mountains days are sunny and fine in a jacket, but nights are near freezing. The coast and Kutaisi get more rain than the east. For the coming days see Tbilisi weather and Kazbegi weather.

Early vs late October

Early in the month it is almost summer: Tbilisi can reach 22–25 °C, the sun sets around 18:45 and beach season is still on. By late October days are around 15 °C, evenings are cool and sunset is around 18:00 — but it is the peak of autumn colour in Tbilisi, Borjomi and Kakheti. The first snow can fall in the mountains in the last days of the month, so plan Kazbegi and Svaneti hikes for the first half.

If your trip slips into November, see the separate Georgia in November guide on what's open in low season. All months are compared in the best time to visit Georgia, and mountain seasons in the best time to visit Kazbegi.

Where to go in October: routes and prices

  • Kazbegi — the slopes around Gergeti turn yellow, the air is clear and crowds are thinner than in summer. The Kazbegi tour is linked above.
  • Kakheti — wineries, Sighnaghi and monasteries among the vineyards. Kakheti tour from ₾170.
  • Rtveli — a day in a winemaker's vineyard: picking, pressing and a feast. Rtveli tour from ₾225.
  • Borjomi — the park and gorge turn yellow and red. Borjomi tour from ₾178.
  • Mtskheta — Jvari and Svetitskhoveli half an hour from Tbilisi, easy on arrival day. Mtskheta tour from ₾98.
  • Batumi — the last beach weeks in the first half of the month. Batumi tour from ₾250.

October is also a good month for monasteries: churches aren't hot and there is no snow in the mountains yet. Nineteen sites with distances are in monasteries in Georgia.

Rtveli in October: the Kakheti grape harvest

Rtveli is both the grape harvest and a family celebration. In Kakheti, Saperavi and Rkatsiteli are usually picked from late September to mid-October — the exact date depends on the year and how ripe the grapes are. Guests cut bunches, tread grapes in a wooden press called a satsnakheli and taste the sweet fresh juice, majari. The day ends with a supra.

My advice: if you arrive in the second half of October, book rtveli ahead and keep a day or two spare — picking can move because of rain. What Kakheti looks like in autumn and which wineries are open is in my Kakheti in autumn guide.

Harvest beyond Kakheti

Kakheti produces most of Georgia's wine, but it is not the only region where October smells of grapes:

  • Racha — home of Khvanchkara, a naturally semi-sweet red from the Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli grapes. For this style the grapes are picked late, mostly in the second half of October, and the cool mountain autumn stops fermentation before all the sugar is gone.
  • Imereti — lighter whites from Tsitska and Tsolikouri, traditionally made in qvevri with less skin contact than in Kakheti. Easy to combine with Kutaisi and Prometheus Cave.
  • Kartli — close to Tbilisi, with white Chinuri and Goruli Mtsvane, also used for sparkling wine.

If you have only one day for wine, Kakheti is still the best choice — the distances are short and the wineries are used to guests.

Food and wine in October

October is harvest season at the table too. In Kakheti you can try majari, the sweet, barely fermented young wine, and watch churchkhela being made: strings of walnuts dipped into grape juice thickened with flour. The same thickened juice, served as a pudding, is called tatara. Markets fill up with pomegranates, quinces, walnuts and the first persimmons.

After rtveli families distil the pomace into chacha, the strong grape spirit, and at a village supra you will almost certainly be offered both. If you want to buy wine to take home, a good bottle of Saperavi in a Tbilisi wine shop costs ₾12–20, much less than in a restaurant.

The sea in October: can you swim?

Based on 2023–2025 averages, the water off Batumi is about 23 °C in the first half of October and about 20 °C in the second. You can swim all month, but late October brings more storms and rain. The best beach days are the first two weeks. More about the city: Batumi guide.

Batumi in October beyond the beach

Even when the sea gets rough, the coast has plenty to fill a day. The Batumi Botanical Garden at Mtsvane Kontskhi, north of the city, is at its most colourful in autumn and drops straight down to the sea. South of Batumi stands the Roman fortress of Gonio, and in the hills of Adjara the Makhuntseti waterfall and the old arched stone bridge nearby make an easy half-day. For forest walks, Mtirala National Park is one of the wettest corners of Georgia — beautiful, but go only on a dry day.

October holidays

  • Tbilisoba — the city festival on the first weekend of October, 3–4 October in 2026. Details in Tbilisoba.
  • 14 October — Svetitskhovloba (Mtskhetoba) — the feast of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta, with a service and many pilgrims.
  • Rtveli — in Kakheti usually until mid-October, longer at some farms.

Getting around in October

Roads are dry almost everywhere in October, so every kind of transport works. These are the fares I see in 2026:

RouteMarshrutkaTaxi / transferTime
Tbilisi – Mtskheta₾3₾20–3030 min
Tbilisi – Sighnaghi₾8–10₾100–1301.5–2 h
Tbilisi – Kazbegi₾15₾150–2003 h
Tbilisi – Kutaisi₾15–20₾200–2503.5 h
Tbilisi – Batumitrain from ₾29₾350–4505–5.5 h by train

In Tbilisi a metro ride is ₾1 with a Metromoney card (₾2 refundable deposit), a Bolt ride in the centre ₾3–8 and the airport run ₾25–35. A sedan from a rental office costs ₾80–120 a day. In the first half of October the Jvari Pass to Kazbegi is snow-free; after about 20 October check the road status on the morning of the trip. Train times and classes are in my Tbilisi–Batumi train guide.

October trip budget

Day tour from Tbilisifrom ₾98 (Mtskheta) to ₾250 (Batumi)

Two people travelling comfortably spend about ₾400–600 a day. October is shoulder season, so most Tbilisi hotels cost less than in July, but harvest weekends fill the guesthouses in Sighnaghi and Telavi — book those two or three weeks ahead. The full breakdown is in how much a trip to Georgia costs.

A 7-day October route

  1. Day 1 — Tbilisi. Old Town, the sulphur baths and Narikala before sunset, which falls between 18:45 and 18:00 over the month.
  2. Day 2 — Mtskheta. Jvari and Svetitskhoveli in the morning, a free afternoon back in the capital.
  3. Day 3 — Kazbegi. Ananuri, the Gudauri viewpoint and Gergeti; leave by 8 am.
  4. Day 4 — Kakheti. Rtveli at a family winery, then Sighnaghi and Bodbe.
  5. Day 5 — Borjomi. The park in autumn colours and Rabati Castle in Akhaltsikhe.
  6. Day 6 — Imereti. Gelati, Prometheus Cave and one of the canyons.
  7. Day 7 — Batumi or Tbilisi. In the first half of the month take the train to the sea; later, stay in the capital.

Without a car, days 3, 4 and 6 are easiest with a guide; the rest work well by public transport.

Hiking in October

The first half of October is the last comfortable window for mountain trails. The walks I recommend this month:

  • Gergeti Trinity Church — from Stepantsminda (1,740 m) up to the church at 2,170 m, about 1.5 hours on foot. Details in things to see in Kazbegi.
  • Truso Valley — an almost flat walk near Kazbegi past mineral springs and abandoned towers.
  • Borjomi — park and forest trails where beeches turn gold in mid-to-late October. See the Borjomi guide.
  • Tbilisi — from Narikala through the Botanical Garden to the waterfall, an easy city walk.

Late in the month check the forecast for snow above 2,000 m. The road to Tusheti usually closes in October, so leave that region for summer.

Autumn colours: where and when

  • Kazbegi — the slopes around Gergeti turn yellow first, in early and mid October.
  • Borjomi and Bakuriani — the beech and mixed forests peak in the second half of the month.
  • Kakheti — once the grapes are picked, the vineyards of the Alazani valley turn red and gold, usually in late October.
  • Tbilisi — the city's parks and the Botanical Garden are at their best at the very end of October and in early November.

Colour depends on the year: a warm, dry autumn holds the leaves longer, while an early frost in the mountains speeds things up. For photos, aim for the morning, when the low sun lights the slopes.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Saving the beach for the end of the month. After mid-October storms on the coast become more frequent.
  2. Booking rtveli for your last day. Rain can push the harvest back, so keep a spare day.
  3. Starting mountain days late. By 31 October it is dark before 18:00, and the Kazbegi road is slow after dusk.
  4. Hailing street taxis. From the airport they ask ₾50–80; Bolt costs ₾25–35.
  5. Packing only summer clothes. Kazbegi nights drop to about 2 °C.

Practical notes

  • Mobile internet — a Magti SIM with 15 GB for 30 days costs about ₾20; buy it at the airport or in any city office.
  • Money — cards are accepted almost everywhere in cities, but carry some cash for villages, markets and marshrutkas. Bank of Georgia and TBC ATMs charge about ₾2–3 per withdrawal.
  • Taxis — use Bolt or another app with a fixed price; it is cheaper and avoids haggling.
  • Weather apps — mountain forecasts change fast, so check Kazbegi and Svaneti on the morning of the trip.

Where to stay in October

  • Tbilisi — Old Town and Sololaki for walking, Vera for a quieter neighbourhood with cafés. The capital is the natural base for day trips to Mtskheta, Kakheti and Kazbegi.
  • Kakheti — Sighnaghi for views over the Alazani valley, Telavi for more wineries within a short drive. During the harvest a family guesthouse often means joining the hosts in the vineyard.
  • Kazbegi — Stepantsminda has guesthouses and hotels with views of Mount Kazbek; nights are cold, so check that the room is heated.
  • Batumi — Old Batumi near the boulevard, if you go to the sea in the first half of the month.

October with kids

For families October is easier than summer: no heat in the car and short queues at the sights. Children love rtveli — treading grapes in the press is the highlight of the day. Prometheus Cave costs ₾5.50 for ages 6–18 and is free under six, and on the Batumi train children under five ride free without their own seat. More ideas are in Georgia with kids.

Is October a good time to visit?

ProsCons
Warm days in Tbilisi and the lowlandsNights near freezing in the mountains
Rtveli and new-season foodHarvest dates move with the weather
Sea still warm in the first halfMore storms on the coast later in the month
Fewer tourists than in summerDays shorten by about an hour and a quarter

For most travellers my answer is yes: October gives you mountains, wine and the sea in one trip, which no other month does as well.

What to pack

  1. Layers — T-shirt by day, sweater in the evening, a jacket in the mountains.
  2. Swimwear — if you're heading to the sea in the first half of the month.
  3. Comfortable shoes you don't mind ruining — rtveli gets sticky.
  4. An umbrella — for Batumi and Kutaisi.
